Vista licence: punishment for frequent upgraders?

Yea, just changing monitors on Linux is a PITA. You have to edit the
xorg.conf and change monitor type, change supported resolutions and also
generate a modeline using xvidtune or else if you are dual booting X will
shift the image over aobut 1/2". All this has to be done using a text
editor. This is not an issue for me but it is for a noob.

Most distros that are aimed to be user friendly include some gui tool to
do this for you.

Yes, but its still got quite a way to go too.

I disagree. I think that the current state of most linux distros are quite
appropriate for the general population.
That is a bare faced lie.
Far from it. Fedora Core or Ubuntu are loads easier to install than
Windows.

And applications have been easier to install for some time now.

I think the problem is, when you are talking about linux, you are not
talking about ONE operating system. It's easy to pick one or two random
distros of linux (out of hundreds of possibilities)... try them, have
trouble with them, and then want to bash linux based on your specific
experience with linux.

But if you happen to try one of the better distros, you will see that linux
is easier to install and configure (including applications) than windows
ever will be. I'm not up on what some of the better distros are at the
moment, but I've heard that various flavors of ubuntu (kubuntu, xubuntu) are
worth a try. From my limited research, I'd be tempted to give freespire a
shot, also.

I know the last three distros I tried were ALL easier to install and
configure (MUCH easier) than windows XP ever will be. And some of those
distros I'm talking about are years old by now (ancient). I can imagine how
easy linux must be by now. -Dave

Applications. That has a nice ring to it. No telling what you are
talking about though.

Applications Applications Applications Applications Applications.

That's what it's all about.

You can deny it to kingdom come, but in fact Linux doesn't run
applications like Windows runs applications.

Linux is a server operating system, it doesn't/can't compete with
Windows.

Unless they want to run applications.

You are aware that some linux distros ship with literally everything and the
kitchen sink included, right? There are certain MS-proprietary applications
that won't run on linux, but it's easy to live without them, if you care to
try. My bet is, with the release of Vista, lots more people are going to
CARE to try to live without MS. -Dave

That's actually a good thing. Most people prefer their applications to
start and run fast, without crashing often. -Dave

Thats completely silly, particularly if they want to dual
boot so they can play their games under XP etc.

Nope.

Fedora Core or Ubuntu are loads easier to install than Windows.

Bare faced lie. Those arent any easier to install than XP.

Another bare faced lie. Cant get any easier
that clicking on what you have downloaded.

That's right. Standardization is what it's all about. That's the
reason consumers and programmers are stuck on one operating system.
I wouldn't want to do lots of research just to figure out which
version of Windows I'm supposed to use.
But if you happen to try one of the better distros, you will see
that linux is easier to install and configure (including
applications) than windows ever will be.

Sounds like a fishy definition of "configure". Most Windows
applications don't require configuration during installation. If
you're talking about personal preferences, a menu-driven system is
extremely easy to use.
I know the last three distros I tried were ALL easier to install
and configure (MUCH easier) than windows XP ever will be.

Like the first time you said that, I don't know what you're talking
about. I've installed the various flavors of Windows probably over
1000 times and it's easy as pie if you know how to press the Enter
key.

If you are talking about hardware.

Oh nevermind, I just remembered how silly you are.

That's Mike T. pretending like the only difference is that you have
to pay for Windows applications and you can get Linux applications
for free. Obviously he is living in a fantasy land.

Incredibly silly.

what applications? the ones written excusivly for you particular distro
according to the 'LIST' of hardware your allowed to buy?

Wake up and smell the coffee, nutjob.

Seems to me that this is a test. To see just how far MS can take this before
the camels back breaks. This whole MS thing is just that, uncharted ground.
Every step that MS makes, shows us more and more how things are done, and
certainly how serious a microscope will be put on you when you fight the
powers that be.

Well, virtually every Linux distro comes with thousands of applications
of every description. With Windows, you have to buy most of them
separately.

Windows is good for games. It's a gamer's OS. Linux is ideal for people
who use their computer for non-trivial pursuits. If you don't care
about World Of Warcraft or Half-Life 2, then you don't need Windows at all.

I'll keep XP for games. If the day comes when games demand Vista, I
might get one copy for my gaming PC.

Oh piss off with the "Server Operating System" horseshit. You're like a
friggin' pitbull with a limited vocabulary. You just keep repeating the
same stupid drivel over and over. You and the JADass idiot.

If people like Linux, they like Linux. If they like Windows, they like
Windows. Same for OS-X. Same for Unix. Same for any OS. If you like it
*and* it does the job you want it to do, then who the hell are you to say
otherwise.

Goddam arrogant troll.

No distro can ever do that, most obviously with ipod,
digital TV capture card and camera support etc.

Then there's stuff like synergy.

Another bare faced lie if you need to use many
office docs that come from outside your system.
My bet is, with the release of Vista, lots more people are going to CARE to try to live without
MS.

Sure, but it will STILL be a tiny subset. Essentially
because the absolute vast bulk of personal desktops
out there just run what came with the hardware.
