cannot delete or move message from outbox

It is unfortunate that so many people are not aware of Microsoft's
penchant for hiding critical files and folders.
Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View, select "Show
hidden files and folders." While there, uncheck "Hide extensions
for known file types."

I tried this suggestion. When the WMUtil box came up the Clear Outbox would
not highlight. It said it would not until Windows Mail was closed. I had
already exited out of Windows Mail. I clicked on Change, tried to get into
MSMessageStore, and could not get rid of it either. Help. This is keeping
me from doing my work. I have switched over to Outlook from my Office 2003
files, but it will not import my groups into the contracts from Windows Mail.

Go back to http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/
and read the Program Operation notes. In particular, the
paragraph that says " If Windows Mail is open OR if a current WinMail.exe
process is running, the Database functions are disabled, and they (the
WinMail processes) must be terminated before these features are available.
(If WinMail is closed and these buttons still remain disabled, then perform a
CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and under Processes find WinMail.exe and click on it,
and then click the End Process button.)"

I had already made sure Windows Mail was closed before. I just did the
CTRL-SHIFT-ESP, and the only thing that was open was this Communities file.
So I could not close WinMail.exe from that. I still can't get the Clear
Outbox to highlight.

If the only thing that was open was Communities, then you were
not on the Processes tab (as instructed). You were probably
looking at the Applications tab.

Something tells me you have difficulty following instructions. :-)

Can't read websites either.

Help, Help...

This message has been 'stuck' in my Vista mail outbox for weeks now, have
been trying several of the things you have suggested in this discussion page,
but with no success. when i check the outbox directory in windows explorer,
its empty, but when i look at it in Vista Mail, there is this one 'stuck'
mail. what can i do, other than remove Vista from my machine and return to XP
pro..

any help would be appreciated. i can't be the only one with this problem,
do microsoft care enough to fix this..??

This issue of a message being stuck in the outbox is a very common
occurrence with Windows Mail.
A successful fix has been developed by Steve Cochran:

Go to http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/
Be sure to read the Program Operation notes! When you start to
download the file, be sure to choose Save rather than Run.
After wmutil.zip finishes downloading, choose Run, then Extract. Then it
will show the extraction folder with two files in it, WMUtil.exe and scxout.dll.
Run WMUtil.exe, wait until the buttons become active, then click on
Clear Outbox. It may take a while. Before you start, make sure
Windows Mail is not running.

Good luck.

Hi Steve,
Your suggestion has worked twice. But the problem (e-mail stuck inoutbox,
can't send any messages) happened again today. I wanted to run your utility,
but find that windows mail is no longer located where it should be (in
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\). I can't seem to locate
it, maybe because of all the tinkering I did the last two times. Now
"Microsoft" is empty!

Can you tell me how I can find it, and if I can still use your utility if it
is not longer in it's proper place?

Thank you!

What anti-virus are you using?

The files are hidden so make sure you have it set to show hidden files.

I have added a routine to my WMUtil program (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) that
will clear the outbox of stuck messages. Try that instead of the other
technique. That way you won't have to obliterate the entire database.

I have managed to fix the problem but all previous suggestions did not work!
My solution is to find the windowsmail.msmessagestore file and rename it to
windowsmail.msmessagestore.old, then start Windows Mail, it will tell you
there is an error and it is recovering the message store. When recovered,
the faulty message should be deleted.

I ran WMutil program but still could not clear one struck message in the
Outbox. I can receive messages but am not able to send any new email. Can you
suggest some other remedies. I have tried to empty the file folder also, but
it did not help.
Thanks.

You haven't made it clear if you were a able to run the "clear outbox"
function
of WMutil and it didn't work or you weren't able to access said function.

If you couldn't access said function it would have been due to not
following the instructions...

"If Windows Mail is open, or if a current WinMail.exe process is running,
the Database functions are disabled, and the WinMail.exe process must be
terminated before these features can become available. (If WinMail is closed

If the "Clear Outbox" button didn't work (what error did you get?), then the
only other recourse is to wipe out the database. So go to Tools | Options |
Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder to find the message store location.
Then move everything under that Windows Mail directory to another directory,
so that the Windows Mail directory is completely empty. Then restart WinMail
and it will open fresh with nothing in the database. You can then add your
accounts and if they work correctly then you can import messages from the
directory to which you moved the files back into WinMail (see
www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm2wm).

This is unbelievable! What you are suggesting to do is way beyond my
understanding. Excuse me but shouldn't Microsoft be looking into this and
giving us a fix, instead of trying numerous ways to fix a problem they
created?

No one has a clue what you are talking about as it doesn't relate at all to
the message you quoted.
