Sorry for the first one I hit the button before writing the message. I want
to thank Steve Cochran for the WMUtil program. By following the instructions
to the letter it helped me get rid of the ghost email in my outbox that was
blocking me from sending emails and making me intensely dislike Vista and
Windows Mail all the more. It also ended hours of frustration.
Thanks again.

He is a good guy, but he quit smoking. Does that make him a quitter?

Go to the outbox directory in Windows Explorer. The location will be:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders\Outbox

and with WinMail closed delete all the files.

Sorry, i have no idea of what Steve is talking about and I have the same
problem. I can not delete from my mail box. I am sure Steve knows what he
is talking about but I need help in laymans terms.

No, it means I'm no longer a slave to nicotine, as some I know are.

This issue of a message being stuck in the outbox is a very common
occurrence with Windows Mail.
A successful fix has been developed by Steve Cochran:

Go to http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/
Be sure to read the Program Operation notes! When you start to
download the file, be sure to choose Save rather than Run.
After wmutil.zip finishes downloading, choose Run, then Extract. Then it
will show the extraction folder with two files in it, WMUtil.exe and scxout.dll.
Run WMUtil.exe, wait until the buttons become active, then click on
Clear Outbox. It may take a while. Before you start, make sure
Windows Mail is not running.

Good luck.

That link really helped! Now if you could just send me similar directions
for the message "stuck" in the inbox which supposedly no longer exists. I
would appreciate the help.

Just ignore that one.

I will say that in my Windows mail, the issue is not exprssly related to the
outbox, but primarily to the Deleted Items folder. And I hae noticed that
this seems to be a situation where only those items in which Windows Mail can
not open the file that the problem is happening. The messages that seem to
be deleting are ones where the text or body of the message DOES appear. The
message in the preview pane shows the following: " Windows Mail encountered
an unexpected problem while displaying this message. Check your computer for
low memory or low disk space and try again." Now my Machine is brand new and
contains a pair of 120 GB hard drives and 2 GB of RAM. So I am pretty sure
that the low disk space or low memory isn't the problem. Any suggestions??
I, along with seemingly many others, I am sure, would appreciate some sort of
resolution to this problem.

Glad it worked for you. If it happens again, and you get tired
of applying this temporary fix, consider switching to Windows
Live Mail.

The error message is bogus.
What is happening is that something (virus scanner?) has deleted
that message file, but the database or index of messages still has
a reference to it.

Only Microsoft can develop a permanent fix to this problem.
Unfortunately, MS is not dedicating sufficient resources and
programming talent to get it done. From all indications it
appears that their available resources are all tied up with
developing and improving Windows Live Mail (WLM).

So, see the handwriting on the wall and act accordingly!

This fixed my "OUTBOX" and now I can send e-mails. Note, I had
to"CTRL-SHIFT-EXC, go under "PROCESSWS and find WINMAIL EXE and click on END
PROCESS even tho I had already closed WinMail. Running the utility did the
trick.

Thank you very much.

Steve S. ,,Thank again.

Glad it worked for you. The credit belongs to Steve Cochran
who developed the program and made it available for free.

I have the same problem and have tried to run the WMUtil utilty, but the
three top boxes remain ghosted so that i cannot click 'Clear Outbox'. Does
