Close Windows Mail and WMUtil. Right click on the Taskbar at the bottom of the
screen, select Task Manager > Processes tab, scroll down to WinMail.exe and
press End Process button. Restart WMUtil.

I have the same problem and have tried to run the WMUtil utilty, but the
three top boxes remain ghosted so that i cannot click 'Clear Outbox'. Does
anyone have an answer to this?

I know it's un-American, but read the instructions.

I'm afraid I still cannot get it to show the 'Clear outbox' un-ghosted. I
will have another go after a 'Brit' wins the Formulae 1 Grand Prix!

Did you not see WinMail.exe after going to the Processes tab of Task Manager?

No. I have tried again and the utility shows the message "close windows mail
to enable... the three boxes". I then looked at the list of names in the
Processes tab of Task Manager, and WinMail.exe is not shown. Yet when I Run
the utility the three boxes are not enabled. This is most frustrating as
other s with this problem seem to cure it OK.

Then I don't know what could be wrong.
You'll have to wait for the author of that utility,
Steve Cochran, to reply with additional advice.

If it was me, I'd simply switch to Windows Live Mail.

I have now successfully managed to remove the message from my outbox. I have
sussed what I was doing wrong, which may help others in the future.
When I looked at the Task Manager list and could not see WinMail listed I
assumed it was not running. However, there is another box at the bottom
entitled 'show process for all users', and when I clicked this, sure enough,
it showed that it was running in my Wife's machine, even though she does not
use WinMail! Once this was ended the routine worked fine.
may I add my thanks to Steve Cochran for providing the solution.

Thanks for the feedback. I would not have guessed that WinMail.exe
could be running for a logged-off user who never uses WinMail.
Persistent bugger!

The mail cleaning utility worked just fine to get two messages cleared that
were stuck in the out box.

I noticed that if I do not click OK at the the pop-up message, "An unknown
error has occured," Microsoft Mail continues deleting the files. If I just
don't click OK until after the "Deleting Messages..." window appears,
most--but not all--of the message are deleted. Then, I click OK.

I have 35 emails in both my inbox and deleted mails box that I cannot delete,
move or open. I need some easy to use instructions plse to rectify this
problem as I am not a computer whizzkid.

This is blocking all messages, both new and reply messages and is therefore
urgent that I fix this. the error message is " an unknown error has
occurred".

I too have been fighting the same issue for a few weeks, and I've finally
found a fix.
Go here, http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/ and download
Thunderbird. Or Outlook, whichever you're more comfortable with.
There's been a few sites state that the problem with Windows Mail won't be
fixed. No I can't remember which sites but the sources were supposedly from
Microsoft. Apparently they are giving up on it and concentrating on turning
the newest Hotmail into Windows new email proggy.
After installing either program you can export all your messages from
Windows Mail to the new program. I have since removed my mail accounts from
Windows Mail and Use Thunderbird for mail and am still using Windows Mail as
my newsreader.
Just got tired of the BS trying to fix a problem that will just come back.
Good luck to you.

I am using Windows Vista, have one message cannot delete or move. I have
tried all the suggestions given here..What else can I do? Thanks,

Under junk e-mail options, unclick "Permanently delete suspected junk e-mail
instead of moving it to the Junk E-maiL folder. Click APPLY. Click OK. This
will send the bulk of the auto-deleted mail the Junk E-mail folder, which
works fine. For other deleted mail, you would still need to use a workaround.

If you are not willing to just ignore them, the only way is to delete both
copies of the database (which does not contain the messages, but only
references to them) and let WinMail rebuild it.
First close WinMail, then use Task Manager to make sure there are no
instances of it under applications or processes.
Then click Start | Search | Advanced Search
Check the box to include non-indexed, hidden and system files.
In the Name field type WindowsMail.MSMessageStore and click the Search
button.
It should show you two copies. Delete both of them and re-open WinMail.
WinMail will work in the background and recover all of the messages that are
really there.
