Message Body Reads:
Message could not be displayed
Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this
message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again.

When you try to delete it an error message of:
An Unknown error has occurred.

Running Premier: 2GB MEM. 180GB HD.

To Judy and all...have same issue & using Vista Home Premium...followed your
instructions thru start...all prog...and got to Your Name and then looked for
"AppData" and could not find. Any thoughts or suggestions

You have to go into Tools>Folder Options>View and enable View hidden files and
Folders to see the AppData folder

If you just delete the database files (which will work okay), then there is
an issue of sometimes WinMail will repeatedly attempt to recover messages
each time it is started. I recommended moving everything out of there so
that this would not be an issue.

My computer is new with 2G RAM. Low memory or low disk space isn't an issue.
There has to be a problem inherent with Windows Mail that causes this
"Unknown Error" when attempting to use the Empty "Deleted Items" Folder.

I do not have the "AppData" in the path you provided. What path should be
taken in the abscence of the folder?

Every Vista computer has AppData. You need to configure
your Folder Options to show "hidden" files and folders.

I received a regular email from Dell but when I tried to open it encountered
the same messages as chrylwriter.I have plenty of memory and disc space.

Thank you Judy this worked a treat for me.

Had same problem - with ghost emails that I could not delete and got unknown
error. I saw an earlier post that was "readable" and tried it tonight.
first - turn off scan emails in your Virus program
Close windows email
open task manager - processes Tab: end porcess for Winmail.exe Applications
Tab: end Task
Go to Start, All Programs, Accesories, Windows Explorer, Computer, Local
Disc (C), Users, Your name (or whatever you called yourself), AppData, Local,
Microsoft, Windows Mail.

Copy the whole Windows Mail folder to a disc or another location (desktop etc)
You may want to rename this file Windows Mail 2 (this is in case something
goes wrong)

Go back to original windows Mail Folder (see above - the one you just
copies) and locate the file named WindowsMail.MSMessageStore Delete this
file. Then delete the same file in the BackUp folder.

Close all windows and restart the computer.

The ghost email was gone. I was able to send, etc.
This worked for me. Hope it works for you......
And thankyou to Bernice who discovered this fix.

Caution, this 'fix' can result in repeated "Restored Folder" regeneration.

I'm having a problem. I still can't delete email that is getting the
message, "Message could not be Displayed" . Brand new computer. Low memory
or disk space not an issue. How do I get rid of this stuff? I'm new to the
pc and not to familiar with it. Please show me a simple way. Thanks.

Same here . I have a new laptop also. Now the question is.... Is Microsoft
working on this problem??

I tried this - it has the side effect of deleting all messages, which is not
excactly desirable. Any solution for this?

I had this problem (some mails in the 'deleted' folder just couldn't be
deleted) for the first time this morning.
The following worked for me: I marked those e-mails as 'unread' and
voila: Now I could delete them! Please don't ask me why <g>

Jochen

No, it doesn't. The mail will reappear in the Recovered Mail folders over
time. If you leave WinMail on with the computer not being used they will
reappear faster.

Or you can import them from the saved location.
