Is this any good? Anyone tried it?
Linux is a good replacement for windows if you
- only use the computer for light work such as web browsing and
semi-formal document creation.
- only use the computer for back end heavy lifting such as providing
file service or database services.
If you need to do serious desktop work such as CAD or professional
level graphics editing, or even serious gaming, you'll need to run
windows.
Linux is a top choice for programming work, or as a replacement for
commercial unixes, or as an internet access platform. That it can't
fill the same role as windows isn't a fault of the operating system but
simply due to a paucity of high end desktop applications. Whatever the
reason, if you're not a programmer, a unix professional, or someone
whose main uses of the computer are limited to email and web browsing
you'll be much happier with windows. Or a Mac.
That being said I think everyone should have a linux box running.
It's a great way to make use of spare machines and it's a good learning
experience for anyone who wants to understand more about these devices
than "what do I click?" And linux can do many things windows can't
easily do such as access "broken" windows file systems, drive older
peripherals, and so on.[/QUOTE]
It is also why before I buy a PC, I know the components will run Linux.
All my old machines do not get tossed. They end up running Linux/UNIX is
some way. But this time, even my new machine has Linux on it, dual
booting.
Has anyone seen Frank? Oops, almost forgot, kill filed...must be working.
