Is this any good? Anyone tried it?

I'm sorry if my post was in the wrong forum. But I thought it was because I
wanted to know what Vista users think of Ubuntu.

I'm amazed to read all the threads and the reactions. The cheers and the
boos.

Basically, I just got to know about Ubuntu. I can afford vista and I have
vista. Just a little pissed off with the problems Vista (and it
predecessors) gave me.

After years of dealing with Windows, I thought someone could come, lift me
off my feet, get rid of the BSOD, forget about updating antivirus, etc.

Guess the day will never come. If it did, what will Bill Gates live on?

Ubuntu isn't Windows, is it. So it has nothing to do with Vista either,
really. Unix is good for some things, but far from all. But I refrain
from installing Vista after reading all the bad stuff about it.
XP works fine for me as a private person. I've been using both Linux and
FreeBSD for many years.

First off - this is an MS group. I'd like to know why you posted here?

Indeed. So AGAIN, why are YOU here?
Yes. It's quite good, though I'd wait a couple of weeks before installing
the latest version which came out today. Use it on four home computers and
five seats I admin at the local library - for public access internet use.
Works very well - troublefree. You can run it as a Live CD - insert the
CD, reboot and it will boot and run from the CD without any permanent
install so you can 'try before you buy'.

It's ok if you need a server solution. Not if you need a desktop solution.

*cough* Aero *cough*

And on that note, my ubuntu desktop looks 100% identical on my Quad Core
3.0Ghz machine with a 8800 GTX than it does on my co-workers Celeron
1.2GHz with a 16mb video memory (shared with system RAM) integrated video
card.

I mean sure, she isn't going to be running Compiz (neither do I for that
matter though, I just stick to standard Gnome)...but I have trouble
imagining her running Aero...or for that matter...Vista in any shape or
form.

I mean, a decent video card is a decent idea *period* no matter which OS.
But man, I've gotten Ubuntu with the standard Gnome desktop running on a
machine as low as some little dell laptop with only 256 megs of system
ram shared with 8 megs of video memory.

So where exactly are you getting that graphics card statement from?

For both Aero and Compiz Fusion, a half decent video card is required. The
basic Windows and Ubuntu desktop appearances are dull.

Unlike some here, I do not denigrate Linux distros, only the people who make
wild claims for them.

Not really. Where is the joke? You make greater claims for Ubuntu than ever
Mark Shuttleworth does. You don't judge from a technical standpoint, so much
as your dislike for Microsoft..

I guess you conveniently don't remember how you've dissed ABI Word, OO
and Ubuntu. Memory loss problem?

Nope.. I didn't diss Abiword or OO. It amused me when you made that claim
about doing 'real' work using Abiword.

As for OO, I don't use it personally, but have loaded it onto systems where
the client can't afford MS Office. There is a good choice of templates for
OO too, but no more than is already available for Office 2007.

Re Ubuntu, it is just one of many Linux distros. If one of my clients wanted
it, or any of the others, I would install it and do my best to support the
client.

My issue with you is that you do not consider all aspects of moving from one
platform to another. Your assumption that people only surf, send e-mail and
write letters to Santa is way off of the mark, and you appear to know
nothing regards exporting data from one application platform to another, or
even if it is possible and that the user will have the functionality they
are used to having. You are clouded by your dislike of Microsoft, and I
still maintain that it makes your advice dangerous.

Pardon me! I have as much right to be here as you do. I'm here for several
reasons - occasionally I can help someone, and I need the mirth it adds to
my life.

Total B.S. Works great as a desktop solution - you'd know that if you ever
tried it.

Enough said. This proves my point:

Now, can you answer this:?

What's to like about Microsoft? They *obviously* hold their paying

Linux is a good replacement for windows if you

- only use the computer for light work such as web browsing and
semi-formal document creation.
- only use the computer for back end heavy lifting such as providing
file service or database services.

If you need to do serious desktop work such as CAD or professional
level graphics editing, or even serious gaming, you'll need to run windows.

Linux is a top choice for programming work, or as a replacement for
commercial unixes, or as an internet access platform. That it can't fill
the same role as windows isn't a fault of the operating system but simply
due to a paucity of high end desktop applications. Whatever the reason,
if you're not a programmer, a unix professional, or someone whose main
uses of the computer are limited to email and web browsing you'll be much
happier with windows. Or a Mac.

That being said I think everyone should have a linux box running.
It's a great way to make use of spare machines and it's a good learning
experience for anyone who wants to understand more about these devices
than "what do I click?" And linux can do many things windows can't easily
do such as access "broken" windows file systems, drive older peripherals,
and so on.

Massive effort? It took about half the time for me to install Ubuntu

Windows Vista is lights years ahead!

Why are you looking backwards, Carey?

I normally would think that this is not an appropriate place for
discussing and advocating Linux but even MVPs don't have self-control,
so let's do it together.

It's getting closer to Windows prior to Vista and it takes much less
time for me to access to XP's shared folders, set up HP printer and to
install Nvidia driver than that with Vista.

I think MS is taking the right approach for rethinking the Windows'
design instead of listening to their techie staffs and fanbois.

I agree.

So the dollar is down right now. Instead of 38 Billion he might just have
30 Billion. Just might have to cut back a bit. Maybe he can carpool to
WalMart
