Don't hold your breath. Folks like you help Microsoft keep the tech industry
(and the spam industry) in business.

Now that is plain silly - most security conscious users do not rely on
MS products to ensure their online safety! XP is, security aside, a
pretty good OS and there some pretty good freeware programs that make up
for what is missing from an OS that was never designed with security in
mind.

I had my part of problem installing SP2
everything go streight forward and my computer was up and running after
installing SP2 and then
I realise that my second hard drive is no longer seen by windows so I had my
C drive which was ok, but my H Drive which is my second hard drive on the
computer was listed in my computer but every time I try to access it it say
can not find path ...

I had to remove SP2 and then everything came back to normal

I am not a techie and as my sign in says I am a memaw of 4. I recieved SP2
through the AU and I did not get any message that said "read before
committing suicide" I had alot of problems but thank God my son is a techie
and helped me through them. He said he would not download SP2 untill they
have worked the bugs out. I disabled the firewall and messenger and tweaked
some things and solved me email delimma and now we are working fine ( my
fingers are crossed) Point here is I agree with Alias. Not all of us want to
spend our time "fixing" problems. MS should have sent instructions to us
"dummies" before just sending SP2 through the update! We can not all be as
smart as some of you claim to be.

Or MS could have checked running processes on the machine for known ones
from large companies that they already knew were going to cause problems,
had decided they weren't going to have the installation made compatible
with, and shut them down. They had months to figure this out.

Ok, I'm sitting here happy to put energy into troubleshooting, Windows
Explorer simply refuses to accept any keystrokes or mouse clicks, can't
select a file in recycle bin, can't select an item in control panel,
can't select a file in an open folder. Have diagnosed that it does not
happen if the system is running in safe mode. Appear to have no other
problems with SP2, thankful for that. Have read hundreds of these
supposed "fixes" and "reasons" that the upgrade didn't work. None of
them apply, don't have Divx, don't have any printer connected, have
all the latest drivers, don't have Zone Alarm, don't have any of the
other "bad" programs, I've even defragged the system, just because some
people somehow think that has anything to do with anything... now tell
me why my energy I've put in for the last three days trying to find a
solution for this hasn't worked?

There are those in the newsgroup with generic good advice, like get rid
of viruses, who could disagree with that, but who I'll bet serious cash
have no evidence that this is the actual source of any of the problems.

There are those in the newsgroup with pointless superstition, like "for
god's sake, just defrag a few more times and maybe a miracle will occur"
but I'll bet serious cash have no evidence that this is the actual source
of any of the problems.

There are a tiny tiny handful of items that actually appear like they
might really address a real problem related to SP2.

And then there are the smart-asses in this group who think it is all
the user's fault and there are no problems with SP2 and if you are
having a problem then you are just too stupid to be a Microsoft customer.
To those I recommend you tell Microsoft buy a series of television
commercials saying "If you had a problem you are too stupid to be
our customer, we don't want you or your money." I imagine Microsoft
will be happy to convey your conclusion to their customers.

Good Post, and I agree. Don't pay any attention to Bobby Boy, this is the same little ¢ünt that got burning CDs wrong and how they work for different types. Of course he never came back to dispute his stupidity on that.

Isn't it funny how stupid people say other people are stupid!!!

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a 'memaw of 4'?

you should try Linux & Co and you will spend *weeks* finding answers to
problems -
The perfect OS if time is of no value for you. Be happy there is Windows at
all even it is still not an OS for novices - btw, Windows never was!

my 2 cents...

Thank you Cindy and I should have said Grandma of 4. And Stephen I did not
say I was a novice. Just said I was not a techie. I have used Windows for
years. I love Windows XP, never had any problems until now. It just seems
like there are a lot of unhappy folks out there that did not appreciate not
being told what could happen before they downloaded SP2.

It is French Tom, well sort of. I called my grandmother Mimi but my first
Grandchild pronounced it Memaw and it stuck.

Privacy advocates have already stomped that option into oblivion. You
really need to consider reality before suggesting things like that.

Um, the PC World web site has a "take the XP readiness test" in their Tools.
I would seem to me that MS could have a "take the XP SP2 readiness test",
don't you?

You really need to consider reality before stating things like that.

Absolute BS. The only holes are in your advice. The SP2 firewall
only protects incoming not outgoing requests.

The average techie would assume (probably wrongly) that you had
already virus scanned the install package.

Cheers,

Cliff

Rubbish! If a user downloads an email with a virus then runs the
program with the virus, then he/she bypasses the firewall. If he then
connects to the Internet, his/her system will try to sned the virus to
others. A firewall that scans only incoming Internet connections only
does half the job.

That said, if you have a personal firewall AND good virus checking the
need for a two way firewall is reduced.

Cheers,

Cliff

I had an absolutely smooth install of SP2. I disabled my AV (Norton AV 2004)
and things went off just great. The only "problem" I had was Norton
complaining about its status being checked by other programs. A simple check
box took care of that though. Love SP2. Great job MS.
