DVD-RW Capacity vs. Actual

No. I researched all my preliminary questions first.

Piss off!

Michael, I've been trying to reply to one of your earlier posts to me -
but they're not going through. So I'm going to add it here and see if it
DOES go through.....

For some unknown reason, my last reply did not go through - must be in
a black hole. So, here it is again:
What makes you think you're older than me?
You told me in another post that I have 12 years on you. That should
make you about 53 YO.
This is the first time you're mentioning an RW disk! See what I mean about
you being a moron? :-)

Please look at the title of my original post in this thread. I'm not
the only moron on the planet! :) Do you know how to read - or do you
just "skim" the postings? I try to include ALL the information a
responder might need to help me - or at least the information my feeble
mind is aware of. Moron!!!
Did you format the disc first?

I'm not aware that DVD's need to be formatted. Copying my files worked
- so I assume the disks I purchased are already formatted. Otherwise,
wouldn't I have gotten a warning message when I tried to write to the
disk? I just tried to add data to the disc and I received a message
that said my other data would be erased. So, you're right - the disc
has been closed. PLEASE tell me where, in Nero9,is to NOT close the
disc when I'm done (poor grammar) data to this disc.

I agree Nero 9 is very user unfriendly.
There should be an option to format the disk first, then try to burn Session
At Once.

I've been looking for the Session At Once option and can't find it.
PLEASE tell me how to get to where you're at when you see this
information. It seems that I might have to download the Help files and
PDF manuals. What a pain in the ass for a moron.

As far as I know you can't "close" an RW disk. There may already
be unreadable data on the disc which is taking up the other 50%.

What kind of unreadable data could be on a brand new disk? Besides, I
find it almost impossible to copy my Folders to a brand new disk, they
ALL copied all right - and I'm left with 0Kb left on the disk (disc?)
The chances of that happening are astronomical. I think your earlier
conclusion is more realistic. However, how do I find out how much
capacity I have left on this disc? Right clicking on the Drive icon
shows 100% utilized.
Another word about RW's. They corrupt very easily, so don't store anything
of importance on them.

Please don't take this wrong - but is this your opinion or can I verify
this?
Now, moron, try again, and do it right!

I'm trying but I'm going to assume Nero was developed in Europe -
because of the GUI. Very difficult to learn my way around. I hope you
continue to help me. I'm cetainly willing to do some work but it helps
me when someone ppoints me in the right direction.

Ya know, DICK, Bob and I are doing just fine. If you bothered to take that
cactus out of your a$$ you would've seen this and taped your fingers
together.

If you used a newsreader instead of the web-based forum you'd see all my
replies. I'm posting from one of Microsoft's newsgroups,

So am I - and I'm using Fprte.

Don't understand what you mean by folders and/or files in the root of
the DVD drive. This is the first time I've attempted to write to a DVD
so I'm a newbie. I'm using Nero 9. The capacity of the disk is 4.7GB
and everything I selected burned onto the DVD. However, when I right
click on the drive, it tells me that the drive used 2.37GB (and is 100%
full) and there are ZERO GB left. How do I tell how much capacity I
really have left on the disk? I don't believe that the disk is
absolutely full with what I burned to it (but maybe I'm wrong). I
placed a blank disk from the same package in the drive and it shows
4.7GB capacity.

The root of the drive is D:\ where D means the drive letter of the
drive you're looking at, in this case the CD/DVD drive. It is the root
of the file tree, even though the usual diagram shows it at the top.
Old Windows file systems had a hard limit on the number of entries
(files and folders) in the root of a disk drive, such as C:\.

DAO means disc-at-once, and it means that after the copy is complete,
the disc will be closed/finalized (whatever you like to call it) by the
program so that no more writing is possible. Thus the remaining
capacity is shown as zero. Some software just asks up front if you want
to close the disc when finished, other SW asks at the end, and there
are no doubt other variations.

An unfinalized disc (even a read-only disc) can be added to, but can
usually only be read and written by the program that wrote it. It still
may be seen as having zero left over capacity if Windows Explorer can
read it, but the burning software can figure it out.

There's more, but I'll stop while I'm still relatively sure of what I'm
saying.

I know you mean well - but you have to learn the difference between
someone who's being mean and obnoxious and someone who just has that kind
of humor. Michael and I understand each other and, like he said, we're
doing just fine.

Thanks, Gene, for the information. I kind of got that from Michael's
posts.

Yes, but I thought it might be fun to give that info without the "M"
word :-)

I do understand that you and Michael have a cordial entente, but
still...

Excuse me - it's Forte and the same Newsgroup.

Michael, I'm going to try one more time to send you the post that hasn't
gone through. It might make my situation better understood - and make
you laugh too.

Bob

I don't mind at all. I look at it as just a form of humor that the world
needs more of. The problem is: It's difficult to understand that it's
only humor when it's just in writing and you can't see the other person's
face while they're calling you a moron. Michael is to the point - but he
is also being very helpful to me. Therefore, I accept being called a
moron or anything else. I get a good laugh when he writes - and is being
helpful at the same time he's insulting me. I think he and I have the
same type of humor. If we knew each other, we'd probably be great
friends. But I don't mind your comment because I also know it is well
intended - just like Michael's comments are. There ARE a lot of people
on these groups that are just plain mean. I think they just lurk around
looking to cause trouble. They're the type of people I can't stand. They
are of no help at all. They have nothing to offer. When I have a
problem and can't solve it, I turn to these groups for help. People like
you and Michael and some others help me a lot. I'd rather solve my
problems by myself. Sometimes I just need someone to explain something
to me or point me in the right direction. Thank you for your
support..........

Yea, it finally went through. I copied the text to Notepad - then copied
it from Notepad - then pasted it in a Reply.

I printed the manual for Nero Vision 9 and am going to look for the
information I need. I'll keep you informed.

Excuse me - it's Forte and the same Newsgroup.

That's strange. I understand Forte is an excellent newsreader. Do you live
under or near high voltage power lines? Were you born near high voltage
lines? I understand strange things happen to anything living and electrical
in homes near these lines. <humor>

Tell the truth, Gene. You have me filtered. :-)
