I was going round in circles with this. So figured I would try a structured
approach to resolving the issue. I tried the bug fix program, but that only
repaired the database until the next time I accessed it, so that told me the
problem lay with the mail data that is sitting in the folders.
I tried 'one at a time', but no joy.
I refused to delete systems files as this runs the risk of taking out part
of the solution.
So, after much playing around I did the following:
Close Windows Mail
Run Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + Delete)
Check BOTH the applications and processes lists and End Task for Windows Mail.
Run the WMUtil program that you can download to repair the database.
Ok, so now we know that the database is clean and that Mail is not running.
Run Windows Mail.
Go into any jammed mailbox folder.
Highlight all of the mail in it.
Right click on a read message.
Select 'Mark As Unread' from the mouse menu.
They will all become 'Unread'.
While they are all still highlighted, select delete.
I went through each folder and this worked every time.
Hope it helps someone, and as to how this schoolboy error got past Systems
Testing, Quality Gates and UAT at Microsoft on a project the size of Vista is
quite disturbing?
Cheers
