I suggested in another thread that if one was going to maintain win98
beyond the new year it would be wise to download all the available
microsoft updates. I cannot do this because of my dialup status, but if
anyone out there has this in mind I'd sure like to talk with him/her -
it is amazing what can be placed on a cd and how cheap it is to snail
mail same, not that I would be inclined to infringe on Microsoft's
software, if you know what I mean...
Best,
POKO
has nobody else ever considered this before?

Fred Langa discussed this dilemma a few weeks ago in his newsletter:

Sounds very reasonable.

If you tell me where to download that stuff completely (in English and
German (my girlfriend uses Win98SE (German edition)) I surely could place
that stuff on a CDR...

OS Updates: Patches and then some...

Last Updated on October 4, 2003 by Thomas McGuire

"Listed beneath are recommended updates that you should install if you
have Windows XP, 2000, Millennium Edition or 98 Second Edition. Where
possible I've linked to where the actual update can be downloaded & saved
from should you need to apply it at a later date, e.g. due to a re-
install. This listing also covers some important OS updates which not
even Windows Update's features. Updated regularly this site will keep
your Operating System up-to-date with the latest security patches &
more."

I just did it last night on dialup. I skipped downloading the stuff that
said it was for IE 5.5 and I wound up downloading approx 30 megs of updates
for 98SE and it only took about 2 hours of downloading time. But man, do
they ever have them spread out in a ton of subdirectories, all under one
directory called wu.

Where are the files? I want to download the entire file, not just an
installer.

<http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp?corporate=true>
Select "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems" on the
first page, select your OS and Language on the next, then hit search.
Browse results and click ADD button to add individual updates to
*download basket*. When done adding goto download basket, input a
local directory to save to (or use Browse button to find one)
and click "Download Now".

If you only want to download what is required for your current Windows
installation, use the regular windows update first, do not
install/download from there, but copy the result list and go the above
URL - and select updates according to the list you just copied.

All the best,

Found this post concerning the same issue early in the day 10/04/03.
Very easy to do. Nice tip Gordon :-)

Subject: Windows 98 Updates
From: Gordon Darling <[email protected]>
Newsgroups: alt.comp.freeware

Whilst Windows 98 is still the most widely installed OS in the world it
ain't making any money for Microsoft - they want you to move to XP. As
many will be aware support for Win98 will be withdrawn at the end of this
year.

It is possible to set up "Windows Update" to allow you to download ALL of
the updates individually. You can then copy them all to another
partition/hard disk or burn to a CDR. It's easy enough on broadband but
still possible on dial up if you download bits at a time.

Couple of caveats.
You must be running a Microsoft operating system (I.e. you can't do it on
Solaris or BSD, etc) but you can d/l updates for an OS other than the one
you are running. (You can d/l Win98SE updates from a Win2K or WinXP box).

The procedure is as follows.

a) Go to the Windows update site.
b) Choose personalize Windows update in the left frame.
c) Put a check mark in "Display the link to Windows Update Catalog".
d) There's a new link to Windows Update Catalog under See Also.
e) Click on the link.
f) Make your selection of operating system.
g) Make your selection updates.
h) Download as appropriate.

Hope this helps those of you still using Win98

Gordon

I think he means he doesn't want to do the dirty work himself due to the
time involved.
looking at http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/updates/ I see a hell of a
list downloads - can you imagine the time this would take on dialup?
Obviously those of you on cable cannot imagine watching the download
applet for that length of time. Consider yourself lucky,

I would be willing to bet that dialup users would be happy to pay to
have a cd snailmailed to them. Ahem......

<long list snipped>

Quite a number of items on that list aren't exclusively Windows 98-specific
and will therefore be available after MS stops supporting W98. I think it's
important for us to just get all the W98 patches into our archives at this
point.

Wayne D - 06.10.2003 06:08 :

I visited this URL and want to say many thanks for this great work. But,
I tested to find the following two patches:

(1) XP-KB823980-x86-DEU (against the Blaster worm)
(2) XP-Q811630_Wxp_SP2_x86-DEU (bug printing CHM-files with subthemes)

and can't find these patches :-(

So, is this list perhaps not very complete or did I only a bad search?

I sense a business opportunity here, does someone want to make an
offer? I plan to have a CD writer *soon* but I am not sure what the
learning curve is to not make coasters, so I think I'd like to be in
the clear by getting a good CD from an *experienced* person.

Since we're straying into dark territory here ;-), it might be worth
checking to see if your ISP offers such a service. I think mine does, or
did at one time, and if you supply the URLs, they'll keep burning till
the CD is full and charge AUS$13 per CD, including postage. Just an *OT*
thought.

Nothing to find there as this site seems to check browsers or OSes:
"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update
Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the
most out of your computer.
You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use
Windows Update."

Thats right, the site uses the Windowsupdate engine - you need Windows
with IE to use it (I get the same respons if I try Opera for Windows).
