Windows Mail can not be started

I just started getting this problem after installing 14 Windows Vista
updates. Was ther something wrong with one or more of the updates?

I just installed 8 of those Vista updates (the rest were optional),
and no problems. Make sure you reboot afterwards.

Sometimes it helps to uninstall the antivirus, then reinstall it.
While it is uninstalled, check Windows Mail for proper operation.

Did you test Windows Mail while OneCare was uninstalled ?
If yes, and there was no improvement, you might as well abandon
Windows Mail and get your Windows Live Mail install completed.
Try installing the latest beta: http://download.live.com/wlmail

Gary,

I'm getting a similar message, but with error code 0x800c0155 - says it may
be in use by an antivirus program... I have McAfee but have disabled the
email scanning, to no avail.

My question is, will installing Live Mail help me, will it install properly
and work even if Mail has been corrupted/flawed somehow?

Thanks in advance.

Something in your Windows Mail is corrupted. Hopefully it is
just the mail account, so delete that mail account, restart Windows
Mail, then recreate that account. If no improvement, the
corruption is more widespread.

When all else fails, there are two drastic solutions:

You can try a repair install of Vista:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html
This will replace system files, but is not supposed to affect data.

Another option is to abandon Windows Mail and switch to Windows
Live Mail. It will automatically import your WM accounts, settings,
folders and emails.

I have the same message, problem as bgjon, but after the first sentence, it
reads "initialize junk filtering." When I cancel out that dialogue box,
there's on more box, which reads "Windows Mail could not be started because
MDOE.DLL could not be initiated."

Also, I have McAfee Virus. Why the heck did they put it in my Gateway Laptop
that I bought six months ago with Vista if Windows Mail it isn't compatible
with McAfee!?!? They put in a program that they knew didn't work with the
mail program that comes with the system?!?!

:

Are you running McAfee or Norton antivirus? Those will need to be
uninstalled because they are incompatible with Windows Mail.

I get an error message like this...........Windows Mail can not be started.
The application was unable to initialize the store directory. Your computer
may be out of memory or your disc is full (0x8007005, 5) ??
my disc is not full and i have a lot of memory left, so why cant i open my
mail?
I am getting to hate this windows mail, B.s., i never had so many problems
with this,. outlook express worked with no problems

Yes, the Windows Live Mail installer is able to import from a corrupted
Windows Mail.

To get the released version (November 2007) of WLM:
http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview
or the latest beta, which is even better:

I am getting the same message. How did you fix? I am not very computer
literate so I need a step by step guide. Thanks so much if you can help me.

That method of 'resetting' a corrupted WM is described here:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html
Scroll down to the section "PROBLEM TWO: How to Backup and Reset
Windows Mail ".

That procedure is very labor intensive. Frankly, you'd be much better off
to simply upgrade to Windows Live Mail and be done with WM:
http://download.live.com/wlmail

There is no guarantee that the same problem won't happen again in your
WM, since you have not eliminated the root cause.

So here's my scenario, Windows mail worked absolutely fine with McAfee
running, mail scanning, etc. I do not want to update to a soley internet
based email account ( I have one and like to download my mail). I had an
issue with my computer losing power and it corrupted the mail. How am I
supposed to go in and delete an email account when I don't have the first
clue as to where to find it?

First of all, Windows Live Mail is not "Internet based" email.
I don't understand where you got that idea. It is a desktop email client
program just like Windows Mail.

To delete your email account, look in the obvious place:
Tools, Accounts, select the account, click Remove.
Be sure to restart Windows Mail before recreating the account.

See www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx for background. Your best shot now is to
dump McAfee completely and some other antivirus program that is not as
invasive. Then, since you can't start WinMail, rename the message store
Windows Mail directory to Windows Mail Old. Then try starting WinMail and
see if it will start fresh. If so then you can add your account and also
use File | Import | Messages to get them from the older message store.

C:\Users\{your user name}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail is the
location of the default message store and its likely hidden so go to Control
Panel | Folder options and enable showing hidden files and folders.

See if that helps.

i have only just reinstalled norton as we needed an antivirus on our computer
it cost a bit so i dont want to just deleted it is there any other was of
getting windows mail to work with norton still installed

You could pay Norton a lot of money for support. Or you could give up on
Norton and use an antivirus program that is available for free. The only
advice I have ever seen to get Windows Mail to work when Norton is a problem
is to uninstall Norton, and many people do report problems using Norton.

FREE AV = Windows Security Essentials (FREE, so consider whatever you paid
for Norton as being paid for WSE if it makes you feel the money was
justified).

In addition to Windows Security Essentials, millions of people use Avast
antivirus, which is free for personal use.

I don't understand why people spend good money on Norton when
equivalent security programs are available for free, such as Microsoft
Security Essentials, Avast, and AVG Antivirus.

If you really want to keep Norton, consider upgrading your email
program to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering
bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.
http://download.live.com/wlmail

Regardless of which email program you use, email scanning in any
antivirus must be disabled, for reasons explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

It should be mentioned though that most other free AV programs still contain
an email component that must be deselected on installation, while WSE does
not.
