A calendar of the most prolific acf posters along with revealing

Except for highly specialized business programs, What Shareware or
Commercial programs are not replaceable by Freeware?

My weakness? Nod32 AV, Second Copy (backup program), Performance
Test (bench marking), and FlashGet. Oh yea, and Forte Agent.

Ditto on the av program (same one) and I use a commercial defragment
program. I also have a weakness for a couple of games that are
commercial. Otherwise, It's all freeware.

Well, with "dead" I mean "no longer updated". And it seems to finally
be the consesus that this is the case. This is sad, but will not keep
me from using it.
Maybe it's mature software that no longer needs updating.

Uhm, well, sort of. There are a lot of things that could be done with
it, but it works and works well in its current state.
I know that in every poll I've ever seen about newsreaders, Xnews
wins hands down.

Does he now? He does seem to finally have lost that final shred of
interest in the program. The last update was merely a quick hack; the
bug fix for that hack came over a month later. I'm sorry, but I won't
get my hopes up. I'd rather be pessimistic and pleasantly surprised.

Unfortunately in my business I use more commercial than freeware... this is
mainly compatability reason with clients etc

However I find the commercial packages very cummblesum sluggish and bloated

I use all freeware except AceMoney ands Forte Agent and I don't us it much
anymore.

Yes, it does. But surely there is nothing wrong in answering a question

By the way, what do you use Mercury to do? I have never been able to figure
it out from the website.

coolkeys for the "create new folder in explorer by hitting
ctrl-shift-f instead of right-click > new > folder" feature.

1 by 1 and winamp to play mp3s. 1 by 1 used so that when i double
click a new mp3 i don't lose the last saved position in my main mp3
list.

fusionsoft dvd so that i play dvds after i left my windvd cd at home.
plus it takes screenshots.

irfanview to look at graphics files.

radvideo used to look at bik videos and convert graphics files.

startman for poking around my startup settings.

antivir personal

proximitron

spybot to kill spyware.

cookiewall

used to use killad before i got avant browser (killad can't work on
the tabbed browser window)

zonealarm firewall

2 iconlock programs to restore my icon placement (in case i save
instead of restore on one)

agent ransack to replace the crappy 2 inch by 4 inch windows file
finder that never leaves enough room for directory paths and never
remembers i resized it

easycleaner to clear unneeded registry keys and look at what occupies
most of my harddrive

enditall to kill all programs before i shutdown

metapad: the total notepad replacement. i even followed the simple
directions to rename it so any use of notepad uses it instead.

multirunner so i can run a group of programs at once without having to
do my own batch file.

quick folders to remember the last x number of folders i accessed.

rjhExtensions to get a multiple file renamer, save directory list,
copy file/dir path to clipboard, and duplicate file options in my
right click menu.

The only non-OS commercial software I have on my PC is --

Partition Magic, which I bought before I knew of any freeware
alternatives that seemed easy to use. (I wouldn't say it is

Microsoft Word, which came with my PC. I keep it because it can open
WordPerfect documents, while OpenOffice.org can't.

Otherwise, all freeware.

Not me, I do use some payware.

What can't be replaced by freeware:

Home accounting software (DaviCash, which is able to import statements
from my local bank)
AV (BitDefender)

What I can, and often do, replace with freeware:
Download manager (GetRight)
CD Burning (WinonCD, came with the burner)
Graphic editing (Picture Publisher)

When you have already paid for the program, you better make use of it ;)
