What a strange NG!

Well, considering your moniker, I would have assumed you would think that
happiness is a warm gun. ;-)

How perspicacious.
Y'know, I think this thread has drifted a little off-topic - not that
it was ever on.

I violently agree!

In these parts, we call that "tongue-in-cheek". It's sort of like a joke.
It's hard to explain to an android, but I too hate the very phrase I used.

It's surprising what we androids do understand now that we have
Pentium 4s. Sometimes we still need smileys, though.

You mean... you couldn't see me smiling? You mean there is no need to shave
and wear clothes when chatting on the news groups? I have a lot to learn.

You DO wear a tie and suit, right? Otherwise you are defeating the
popular Usenet posting dress standards.

Evening gowns are preferable for women but a prom dress type will be
accepted.

It wasn't like this in "the old days", when people like SoS and Genna Reeny
were about more often ...

I have been away for a long time, just returned to fill up a couple of
evenings reading and found quite a lot of rancour [like many ngs ] but this
group used to be a lot warmer and many people I recognise [by keyboard name]
were polite - remains to be seen if I still fine them polite.

I have just logged on to this NG and it is full of hate and venom.
Is this
usual for people who want free stuff or have I stumbled into a
twilight zone?

Nobby

Hey Sinatra,

Good to see another one of the old regulars come back! Welcome back!

Usenet never really survived the launch of the ZX81.

It survived. It just changed to reflect the values and mores of
general society, rather than the highly-technical cognoscenti.

Well, your right. It didn't survive.

I am sorry that Nobby & a few others find ACF ''full of hate and
venom''. It is not the norm & things are generally quite relaxed here.

At times I do see tempers flare and unkind words sometimes written but
what family doesn't have their little squabbles. I do not find the
group all that bad. ACF is home for many diverse followers & opinions.
There will be ups & downs. Great discussions are supposed to get you
actively involved. It forces mental challenges & keeps the 'ol noggin
working :)

Although we might disagree with one another at times, this is still
one of the best groups out there :) Please don't let one or two
'family' squabbles upset you that much. Better days are always around
the corner :o)
