Often it's the fastest choice.

Yup - I'm lazy... I tried the other route... Still wound up starting
over every so often. Doesn't take me very long, now.

My company recently had this problem - I discovered the solution while
trying to manually register 'htmlmarq.ocx'

Open regedit and browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image
File Execution Options

You should see htmlmarq.ocx and htmlmm.ocx separate keys. Rename them
to something else, ie. htmlmarq.tmp and htmlmm.tmp.

You will now be able to install Office 97, including the HTML option,
without incident.

DISCLAIMER: I don't know what this section of the registery does or
why these files were apparently blocked (intentionally or accidently),
but this solution worked flawlessly for me. If you feel uncomfortable,
I'm betting you can rename the keys back to the originals and office
will work, but if you need to reinstall, you'll possibly have to
rename them again.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

If you tried to install Office 97 Professional, AFTER installing SP2
and you get this message:

Microsoft Office 97 Setup: Htmlmarq.ocx was unable to register itself
in the system registry.

this is for you. I got the above, researched it and solved the
problem. I am writing to pass this solution on to others.

There are actually 3 different solutions:

[1]
Leave SP2 installed, tweak registry, install Ofc97, tweak registry
again. This is what I did. It worked perfectly and results in a
complete install of Ofc97.

[2]
Uninstall SP2, install Ofc97, re-install SP2. Others have had success
doing it this way and report complete install of Ofc97.

[3]
Leave SP2 installed, custom install Ofc97, unchecking these 2
components:

Web Page Authoring (HTML)
HTML Converter

This is a workaround for those who don't need those 2 components, and
others report success with it.

Now, for full details on # [1] above:

Note: If you are a neophyte and have never worked with the registry
editor, regedit, I suggest you call Microsoft's SP2 support hotline at
this number if you are in the USA:

888-772-4357

They helped me free of charge, through this procedure. Note that this
problem is so new that on 09/13/04, there was no article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base on this. We found this at Google Groups, in
the group: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general, and I am cross posting
this article to: microsoft.putlic.windowsxp.help_and_support. This
solution is also presented at a few other tech support web pages that
can be found via a Google search for:

htmlmarq.ocx

Ok ... here we go:

* Start, Run, Regedit

* File, Export, Export Registry File (save backup, just in case ...)

* navigate tree to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT
\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options

* Look in the left pane of regedit under Image File Execution Options
and find 2 folders (keys) named:

htmlmarq.ocx

htmlmm.ocx

* Rename each to .tmp ... just right click each name, click Rename
from shortcut menu and change the extension only from .ocx to .tmp.

* Close regedit.

* Install Office 97 Professional normally. It should complete
normally. You will probably want to delete the shortcut on the
desktop:

Setup for Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02

It's slightly dated :-)

* Go back into regedit and rename the 2 .tmp back to .ocx

* Done!!!

As Jason wrote in previous message, this solution worked flawlessly
for him and did for me too!

Happy computing under SP2!

Best,
Henry Fiddler
