No, hobbyists and entusiasts are not under the mistaken impression that
Vista Ultimate is like XP Pro. They are under the correct impression that
Vista Business is like XP Pro.

They know what Ultimate is: Home Premium + Business = Ultimate.

Vista Ultimate is simply the entireity of the WIM image file. There is only
one Vista image file. There is not an image for each edition. The edition
you are installing is determined by the product key. Each edition has a
manifest. The product key selects the manifest. The manifest tells Setup
what to extract from the WIM file.

All editions are simply subsets of the single WIM. By using single
instancing it is not necessary to have the same files repeated on the disc
for Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate. Those files exist only
once (single instances) in the image. Ultimate is simply the single
instancing of everything.

If there is anything such thing as a "Developer's" edition of Vista it is
Vista Ultimate + SDK's.

Not quite. Per the Vista EULA, you can't access Microsoft protected file
formats (Microsoft-DRM'd media, protected Office data formats, etc) from
Vista Business running in a Virtual Machine.

Actually, Ultimate also includes Bitlocker which you'd think would be a
part of Business but apparently is not.

Ultimate also includes Media Center and Tablet PC functionality.

Well, Home Premium does include the Media Center, but I don't see the
Tablet PC listed at all on the comparison table.
 
Inking (and the rest of support for Tablet) is integrated into various Vista
editions.
