Ubuntu is very friendly if you only want to browse the net, write an email
and calculate 5 or 6 numbers on a spreadsheet.

Go soak another cork. I have never heard of a Linux Live-CD changing a hard
drive unless some drunk clicks install or format.

You were there when Frank tried to install Ubuntu?

Thanks for the Gutmann reference. I had seen some other stuff of his,
and it's absolutely devastating. I wonder if Windows 7 will scale
back on the DRM, or make it worse. Looks like a lot of the trouble
with Vista is due to the DRM.

Email

OK - Simple EMails you can do.

Surf the web

You can surf the web

Burn CDs.

Probably a pain in the ass with Ubuntu

Another pain in the ass with Ubuntu
Listen to music.

Try getting the right CODECs. Some sites work, some don't. More sites with
with Windows.
Watch vidoes/DVDs.
Maybe

Scan and print.

If your printer comes with drivers for Ubuntu. Otherwise you are SCREWED.
Spreadsheets.

You can add a few numbers. If you need to do complicated calculations, use
Excel.
Presentations

Who would want to present Ubuntu to anyone? Their software is crippled.

Newsgroups.

Not very good. Try getting decent help. Takes long time.

HTML editing.

Basic HTML editing.

Games like Chess, Tetris, all kinds of solitaire, etc.

If you want to play real games, use Windows
Make videos.

Primitive capabilities. For real work, use Windows.

Download photos from a camera and organize them.

You mean download porn off the internet. For real downloading of photos,
use Windows.

Translations.

Yes, you can ask someone to translate Ubuntu gibberish to English. Maybe.

Use a dictionary
Limited.

Learn how to touch type.
BFD.

Edit images.

Limited functionality. Very basic editing. For BEEFIER editing use a
Windows solution.

Send and receive a fax.

Your multifunction printer handles this. Ubuntu is crippled.

Take screenshots.

Oh yea, who needs a screenshot of Ubuntu - Nobody.

Create .PDF files.
Maybe.

Create and use a data base.

Simple database. For BEEFIER database use a Windows solution.

Instant messaging with over 10 different programs in one including Windows
Live Messenger.
IRC.
Bluetooth.

BFD. This is mostly for kids. Once the kids see how crippled Ubuntu is
they will ditch Ubuntu and run to Windows.

and much more!

Much more - Headaches.

What you can't do with Ubuntu:
ANYTHING WORTHWHILE

I think I covered most everything.

Yea, right. The number of posts are down by 50% because Adam is missing and
either with your Sheep or in jail.

That's your and Frank's fantasy, not mine. Those who use Windows are
sheep. Yaknow, like you.

Alias

Wrong. Those who use Windows are smart. Those who use Ubuntu are idiots.

DID I SAY IT DID?????

Probably a pain in the ass with Ubuntu

Not at all. Sony/BMG rootkit does not work. In fact the safest way to copy
one or rip it is with a Linux, Ubuntu will do just fine.
Another pain in the ass with Ubuntu

See above.
Try getting the right CODECs. Some sites work, some don't. More sites
with with Windows.

Only for the MS-DRM proprietary stuff. No one storys in proprietary formats
if they want to play it in 5 years or on multiple devices (fair use).

In fact, with Ubuntu you can use a new open format not available to
Microsoft, OOG.

Works for me.
If your printer comes with drivers for Ubuntu. Otherwise you are SCREWED.

My HP all in one works.
You can add a few numbers. If you need to do complicated calculations,
use Excel.

You haven't used Open Office for quite some time.
Who would want to present Ubuntu to anyone? Their software is crippled.

Actaully, I like it better.
Not very good. Try getting decent help. Takes long time.

pan does a better job intenting quoted text than does Outlook Express or
mail. In fact, they still haven't fixed that in Vista last I checked. That
bug has been in Express/mail since W2000....
Basic HTML editing.

You are kidding right? For simple pages, Open Office can save HTML. For
more complex work I like Kompozer. Works great, even with IE... Best part
about Komposer, is it even works on XP (and Vista I suspect).
If you want to play real games, use Windows

Yea, GNU/Chess versus Titans... LOL. I will give you 100:1 odds on which
one wins when fully set to best game. Takers?
Primitive capabilities. For real work, use Windows.

Don't see why not. In fact MythTV also is a nice PVR without all that DRM
to fight with.
Your multifunction printer handles this. Ubuntu is crippled.

Last I checked only the expensive Vista Ultimate is fax available. In fact
with Vista OEM version you MUST pay extra to get fax. Included with Linux
at no extra charge but you may have to select the package.
Oh yea, who needs a screenshot of Ubuntu - Nobody.

In X-Windows, we were taking screen shots before Bill Gates had his first
copy of CP/M derived MS-DOS/PC-DOS running. Consider the feature anotehr
thing Microsoft borrowed from UNIX.

Trivial, not maybe. I do it routinely. But this is really a function of
Open Office for the most part although other apps support it to. So if you
load Open Office onto your XP/Vista you too can use Open Office to create
PDF files from MS-Office 2003 type docs.
Simple database. For BEEFIER database use a Windows solution.

Which one, MySQL or PostgreSQL?

Beefier DB in MS-Windows? That is why virtually EVERY fortune 1000 company
uses Linux/UNIX with Oracle for scalable ERP and side steps MS-SQL like
herpes?
BFD. This is mostly for kids. Once the kids see how crippled Ubuntu is
they will ditch Ubuntu and run to Windows.

Might be, but Linux has a variety of options here. Pick which one you like.
Many even work with multiple sources so you only need one client app.
Much more - Headaches.

Headaches avoided.
ANYTHING WORTHWHILE

Make Bill Gates another billion, or keep his a$$ kissers happy.

Oh well, if it's that good, send me the Live CD and I'll try it before I
install it and completely **** my system beyond repair. Thanks.

Well....MS hasn't thought that making a LiveCD would be a good idea.

Of course, it isn't. If people cuold try-before-they-buy, maybe noone
would buy.

Someone though took the time to create a Vista LiveCD, and it's only 125
mB!!

I'm not going to try it, you gonna try it ? Nope, I'm not gonna try it,
you try it....let's get ____________ he'll try anyting !!

Pick a d/l site, if you dare.........

Yep, I think it's clear that Microsoft got shafted by Hollywood over this DRM
deal. To the cost of many thousands of hours of coding work on what could
have been a great OS, had it been designed with performance instead of DRM as
the prime consideration.

Still I'm relieved that DRM has been so forcefully rejected by the
computer-buying public, after all the future of a DRM-laced computer industry
would have been a bleak one indeed.

On the same subject, we were discussing the issue of whether DVD encryption
and regionalization is at least partly responsible for the high levels of
piracy.

In the days of vinyl and VHS, there was an advantage in paying, in that you
got a better-quality product than by pirating. Now, the reverse is true. Pay,
and you get an inferior product, thanks to DRM.

The simple fact is, the DVD video format has very poor reliability.
Sticking, jumping, sudden restarts, inability to fast-forward, all are
extremely common. Many people still prefer VHS to DVD for this very reason,
the frequent failed playback of DVD being far more of an annoyance than poor
picture quality of VHS.

DivX/XviD copies on the other hand seldom suffer these annoying glitches. In
almost every way they are technically superior to the DRM-protected formats.
Even when burned to a data DVD, the DivX version is largely free from the
annoyances of the DVD-video version. Not only does it work with near-100%
reliability, it also gives a far better file-size to picture-quality ratio.

Now, convincing people that they have a moral responsibility to pay for what
they use is one thing, BUT convincing them to pay for a product that is in
every way inferior to the 'free' alternative is quite another. Piracy? No
wonder!

ZDNet’s George Ou Exposed as Ignorant Microsoft Shill (Zoon!)

The assault on reason isn’t just a political phenomenon. Microsoft has
long been developing its own cast of apologists who have eked out full
time careers in the field of sputtering out ignorant, unfounded claims
with such insistence and volume that the undecided simply have no
alternative but to line up and applaud their seemingly convincing
rhetoric. Among them is George Ou, who unsurprisingly blogs for CNET’s
ZDNet branded website.

ZDNet desperately needs ad revenue, and the best way to drive that is
to publish sensationalist headlines that catch the attention of
throngs of Diggers. It doesn’t matter that Digg users represent an
unattractive demographic from a real marketing perspective; traffic is
traffic for web click sites.

Take Microsoft’s need for constant, high pitched spin to detract from
its grave mistakes and regular failures and combine it with ZDNet’s
unapologetically desperate brand of sensational headline writing, and
you have fertile ground for arrogant morons ready and willing to say
anything and everything. High up on the moron pile is George Ou, a
blogger billed as a “Technical Director of ZDNet.”
