All these things can be done easy in Dialog, and much more...

Obviously you must use the newsreader you like better, however you can't
say "just didn't have the features I want" and make the examples "can be
configured to flag replies to your messages and play a sound", while Dialog
can be configured to do it.

I don't think you're interested anymore, but this is a good link:
http://www.40tude.com/dialog/wiki/index.php?title=Frequently_Asked_Questions

Thanks for the link. I did take a quick look, and yes, it appears that
you can configure Dialog to do those things, but with a little more
effort perhaps. Still, it's nice to know. I may give it another look
again soon...

I get all tangled up in String Theory. Astrophysics is way bigger than me.

I was pleased to hear the latest theory on the shape of the universe was
named in honor of (Jean Luc) Picard. It's sort of a hollow 3D funnel shape,
not unlike my head.

Ok, I'm playing with Dialog a little now. First of all, how do I get it to
display a message with just a single mouse click on the header?

You should try the newsgroup news.software.readers. There's a wealth of
info there on Dialog. It seems to have a good following. A very nice fellow
named Enrico will fix you right up! (I use Forte Agent, haven't played with
Dialog for a couple of months now)

Ok, thanks very much for the suggestion Bob. I'm just playing around with
Dialog for a while since some people recommend it, but I have to admit that
I still prefer Gravity here. Thanks...

Another possibility is Gravity. Formerly sharware offered by
Microplanet, it has been turned into freeware/abandonware and has been
continued by one of its programmers *and* a group that works on the Open
Source level.

http://lightning.prohosting.com/~tbates/gravity/

The Open Source project group publishes its product on sourceforge.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpgravity/

I am using this latter variant, which allows for re-editing articles and
shows X-face header enttries (albeit they cause a graphical error on my
old Radeon when scrolling back up)

Do any of the above-mentioned readers (Gravity, Xnews, Dialog, etc.)
allow one to download more than 1 file at a time? I checked out the
sites but didn't see this mentioned. I currently use FreeAgent (no
complaints except for single download) and would like something
similar that allows multiple concurrent downloads.

Thanks for any info.

According to the Gravity help, it should allow for downloading several
files in a batch, if I understand it correctly.

When it comes to viewing image files that are attached to a post, you
can either decode the item, which will download the image and decode it
but not display it, or decode and view the image.
Decoding images is useful if you want to retrieve a lot of images, then
go back and review them at a later time.
Viewing an image gives you the opportunity to see the image immediately.

To Decode Images

1. Select the article(s) you want to decode. For multi-part images,
you only need to select one part before decoding the entire image.

2. Clicking the Decode button on the toolbar, selecting the Decode
command from the Article menu, or right-clicking in the thread pane and
selecting the Decode command from the pop-up menu.
</quote>

"image" is their name for attachment.

Thank you very much for your help, may I ask one more question? I
downloaded the zip file, unzipped it, but I don't see a file that
would be used to install Gravity. I'm using Win98SE, how do I install
it?

Thanks again.

I don't know what you are meaning with "zipped file". The problem is,
that there are several "generations" of Gravity, which do overlap. Some
are done by Tom Bates (who continued developing it, after Microplanet
abandoned it), others by a group which puts it into open source and
places the result of their work on sourceforge.net.

It may well be that you just downloaded an update which is supposed to
replace the main exefile only, which is of no use without the rest.
Please read the history of the news on
http://lightning.prohosting.com/~tbates/gravity/
to decide which combination of files will suit you best.
