Stop the FLOODING

Protean Thread seems to have spent over 2 hours copying
descriptions from a website and posting them here in a great
flood. Not a single one contained any reference to whether or not
the poster had tried any of these and/or found any of them useful.
(Well, not the ones I bothered checking ..... I skipped the rest
once I realised it was a flood)

Surely a more acceptable way of posting this type of info would be
to reference the site (www.pcworld.com) and list the 'useful'
finds in just a single post ?

Maybe its just an EGO thing perhaps.
Would you like help with the filtering in Xnews?

I use Xnews and know how to filter thanks.

Oh, I see. So rather than simply filtering out the posts, you decided
to whine about it here? Must be an ego thing.

I was just wondering what Protean Thread was up to, less than 24 hours
after his/her trolling post asking where all the flooders had gone, he/she
starts flooding again ??

I have a fairly high level of tolerance so there are not too many in my
plonk file, but looks like it is time for PT to have a 100 day holiday.

So you know how to filter someones previous posts with Xnews AFTER they
start flooding but before you get to see the flood ?

You are just so clever !

PLONK !

Hey Doc I think some people prefer to have multiple messages, each one
referencing just one program.

This is from the ACF FAQ:

(20) SOME POSTERS MAKE LARGE NUMBERS OF INDIVIDUAL POSTS. WHY DON'T THEY
JUST MAKE A SINGLE POST WITH ALL THE LINKS LISTED TOGETHER ?
Because with a long list many people will re-quote it in total when only
commenting on one of the items. This makes reading/commenting on such posts
more time consuming/difficult for many people. With individual posts it is
much easier to find/follow threads about a particular recommendation, and
comment on it, if desired. If one doesn't want to see these posts then
killfile the people who make them. See 22.

Individual posts also make it easier for people to killfile topics/programs
that don't interest them. Also, some people keep newsgroup posts so if there
are multiples they can save what they want and delete the rest. One big post
would necessitate saving a lot of info one didn't want.

Yes, I do !
Like that, I only read the ones I'm interested to.
Thanks to Protean Thread for his good flood job ! ;-)

Well, if you do not like them, just don't read 'em.
It's so simple ;)
I find it usefull what guys like Protean Thread do here, thats why I post
these updates myself too for others.
And if you think that's an EEEGOOO-thing...
Well that's your problem, isn't it?

There's a difference between what you do and what Protean Thread does.
You're providing update information. PT has just copied links and
descriptions from one web site and flooded the group with that. He
would surely do the group an equal, or greater, service by posting the
URL for the site and leaving it at that. Further, for myself, I have
little interest in a list of untried programs. I never recommend
anything I haven't tried. We are already aware that there are
thousands of freeware programs out there; polluting the group with an
endless list of them doesn't seem very helpful. Of course, I accept
that opinions may differ on that latter point; others may be happy to
download that list and try it out.

But you're right, it's easy enough to killfile him, though I notice
that it needs to be redone every now and again as Mr. Thread morphs.
It all seems very pointless, though, and I suspect it's done to annoy.

A well-reasoned argument in good humour and without offence

That indiscriminately copying and pasting freeware descriptions and
posting them to ACF isn't appreciated by many folks.

Back 5 or 6 months ago Tramp was doing the same thing, and guess what
everyone bitched at him too. Sooooo the response is predictable.

I just give him a 1 day holiday, works like a charm.
