Not a thing. I have the latest copy, use it, and like it. I just
wanted to try another alternative. One of the things I like about
OpenOffice is its ability to write a PDF.

Ah, understood. I've been following the thread, racking my brain, trying
to figure out why there's so much clamor over StarOffice with little/no
mention of OOo, as if it's not a contendor :-)

But where there are free alternatives distributed freely, exercising
freedom of choice (and of comparison) is certainly understandable-sensible.

Do you know, is there a big deviation between the two packages -- save for
the Lindows push?

No, unfortunately I dont. That was one reason I would have given
StarOffice a look.

I use MS Office XP Pro at home for work-related projects and OpenOffice
for most of my personal stuff. While OO can certainly produce files
useable in Office XP, there are some complex functions I'm more
accustomed to using in Office XP.

I have used StarOffice and basically, StarOffice IS OpenOffice. The primary
difference are the little things that make corporate buyers more
comfortable. Primarily, end user support, but there was extra compatibility
with common Office/Corel/Lotus programs, etc.

Also, StarOffice includes a crippled version of Adabas database that
curiously comes with NO support from Sun OR Adabas! I could never get it
(Adabas) to work in any way shape or form, but without support there was no
one to call. If all you need is a good word processor and a good
spreadsheet, and can live with a presentation package not quite as strong as
the competition, StarOffice is a viable office product. But if your needs
are a bit more complex, you'll be happier with Office/Corel/Lotus. (But then
again, if you don't need support, you'll be just as happy with OO!). Well,
it gives you a choice, and that is always a good thing.

Thanks for the input, well-defined.

Nothing is wrong with OpenOffice.org. It is a fine product. However,
StarOffice has a better spellchecker, hyphenation and printing
routine.

Ah, and yet more invaluable comparative information . . . Thanks.

What do you mean by superior hyphenation? Are you referring to bulletting
or to its conversion of double hyphens to single, extended hyphens?

Actually it is hyphenating words at the end of lines. If you use justified
text and have enabled automatic hyphenation in both options and paragraph
style, the hyphenation works better in SO than in OO.org.

Ah, -that- hyphenating. :-) Either way, hyphenation is better than on my
old manual type writer!
