And Sun Started OpenOffice using StarOffice 5.2 code

The point is, you told the OP that they were wrong to say SO is based
on OOo, when, in fact Sun itself says that it is that way around. This
is relevant because SO7/OOo are VERY different animals to the old SO
5.2. The Sun FAQs further indicate that SO's continuing development is
done from OOo codebase, not the other way around. StarOffice 7 Office
Suite is a commercial product built on OpenOffice.org's open source
code to provide the best value, You are welcome to think what you
will, but, when comes to who to believe abvout the origins of a Sun
product, I suspect that Sun knows more about it than you.

Went there ... did that ... jumped thru all the hoops ....

BUT ... in the end that 120 MByte download was only an expiring
trial copy good only for 90 days. Period. This just burns my butt
good!! It AIN'T free, folks!!

You most likely went to the wrong link. I have previously used that
trial version, which prominently displayed its trial version status,
and the number of remaining, with each start up. The version offered
over the weekend does not display any such messages. Furthermore, the
pages from which it was reached specfically state that the purpose of
the giveaway was to test marketing campaigns, which is why, in
addition to giving a valid email addy, one had to sign up to at least
one newsletter. Also, none of the emails from Sun received after
signing up for the download, describe it as a trial offer, and none
mention any time-limited expiry.

Than I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. In anycase
it is not apparently easy to follow the yellow brick road. Do
you offer a final URL for the download?

Hi would you be interested in making a copy of it and send it to me I would
pay all the costs if it would be OK to do it, I know I read in this thread
that you had to supply your email or something to that effect so not sure if
it could be done. I only ask this as I have a very slow connection (dialup
2.5kbs download speed) so a file that size would take me for ever and a day.
I normally wait and hope they come out on a mag cd but I think that it might
not in this case.
In any case thank you for reading this.

Not according to Sun it's not. From the StarOffice FAQs at sun.com:

"StarOffice 7 Office Suite is a commercial product built on
OpenOffice.org's open source code to provide the best value..."
I think this is like a joke.. where you had to be there to understand
it.... I know only because I was tracking it at the time.... that Star
Office came before Open Office.... now maybe they did something in the
interim wherein... OpenOffice became the leader source code... but way
back.... when we were walking uphill in two feet deep snow drifts just to
go to school.... it was Star Office....

As a former user of SO 5.2 <blecchh!>, I know the history.

Sorry to follow up such a dated post, but I just signed up for the
free offer a couple of days ago. Was just wondering... of those of
you who got a copy of StarOffice free via the offer in question...
how long did it take to get the link that they say they will send
by email.

They did say that they would send my email address to a third party
"for the sole purpose of fulfilling this offer" and I guess I've
become too accustomed to instant automated responses, but it's been
over 48 hours, and at least one full business day has passed.

Did anyone else have to wait so long for the followup email with the
link and the serial number? This offer is supposed to expire today,
and I'd hate to see it turn into vaporware.

Thanks,
Jonathan

My email arrived within a couple of minutes.

Oh, wow. Thanks, but never mind. Something about Opera or my proxy
must have stuffed things up. I just tried again in Mozilla and got
the serial number right away.

ciao,
Jonathan

Hi,
I have been looking at the StarOffice site and can't find the link to the
free offer site. Can some one please post a link?

Thank you very much for your help, Rolf.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas."
