Sun Microsystems is offering StarOffice 7 free for download at
http://see.sun.com/Apps/DCS/mcp?q=ST4W21TFZydO63. You do have to give a
valid e-mail address for them to send the serial number. You need the
serial number to complete the download. This could be good for those
who want templates and a few other things not included with OpenOffice.
For those who want to complain about register-ware, blah, blah, blah,
just go ahead and slam or "plonk" me, I don't give a rats behind. I
just thought some people here might want this and I care not what the
control freaks think or it.

Don't hold back, tell us how you *really* feel.

A new type of -ware..."RegisterTwiceWare"
You got to register for a serial number e-mailed to you. Then you have
to register *again* to be able to get to the download...

I didn't want it badly enough to bother....

A mailinator address works fine for registration purposes.

www.mailinator.com

Still takes a few minutes and extra steps, but for software htat
is worth the effort, using a mailinator address neutralizes any
privacy issues.

When I got to the final download page, it only offered several Asian
language versions. What do I have to do to get English?

In other words ... it's freeware.

You know what to do with the e-mail address to reply via e-mail.

Thank You for informing us ...

I downloaded it today with spellchecking add-ons and program update. It
is very nice suite but I could not make finnish spellcheck working. I
tried every trick I found on Sun's 'knowledgebase articles' but it
simply did not work.

I also tried for instance swedish and english spellcheckers and there
was no problem with those at all.

I think it is very hard way for Sun Microsystems to fight against MS
Office if some crucial parts will not work. Many of us do not bother to
try every possible configuration just to make some "simple" things work.

Anyway, I think I'll continue using OpenOffice 1.1, which by the way can
handle finnish spellcheking without any problem.

That is very surprising since StarOffice is based on OpenOffice. I
understand that most of the core code is the same in OpenOffice and
Staroffice!

In fact, at the openoffice.org website, StarOffice is recommended for folks
(mainly businesses) who want support.

Actually it is the other way round...OpenOffice is based on StarOffice

Not according to Sun it's not. From the StarOffice FAQs at sun.com:

"StarOffice 7 Office Suite is a commercial product built on
OpenOffice.org's open source code to provide the best value..."

And Sun Started OpenOffice using StarOffice 5.2 code
