I'm still sifting through all the links you provided, but I wanted to thank
you for some good references. Am hoping to find my solution somewhere in
these pages.

Your account has it locked. Click on another account, like Default User and
open the ntuser.dat file using Notepad to see the type of information that
is stored there. This is a critical system file and should not be altered.

Sounds like a physical system problem. If you are a 98se, Me, or other preXP
system user. Enable classic view in the display properties. As for slow, I
would suggest an antivirus scan, or check to see if your system has enough
RAMmemory.

heh guys????
what is pahokee? ... um is it PAHOKEE??
well i'm going on to the next topic , see-ya..

If I were you I'd learn how to configure your firewall and install/update
your anti virus. Sounds like your PC is one of the zombie army machines that
cause everyone else problems.

dON'T INSTALL SP2! i HAVEAND NOW MY COMPUTER CAN'T TALK
The Village Idiot shouldn't be allowed to handle a computer. If you want to
"talk", use the phone

It does sound like he's pretty screwed up there. But he does make some valid
points. Or at least one. I don't need ANYONE putting a popup blocker or
firewall on my computer that can't be gotten rid of. I've went through all
the suppore deals. Talked to tech support, searched the boards and newsgroups
and they all say that if I do this and do that, that it will not block what I
want to see anymore. They couldn't be more WRONG! Don't believe me, go get a
free, or pay for it if you want, webtemplate. Then try to view the .swf file
in explorer. The popups are there, blcoked content. I even went so far as to
turn the security setings to low and allowed everything to run, still blocked
it. Thank God for mozilla. I just went in and edited the sysoc file and
uninstalled explorer, and media player and windows messenger while I was
there. No Explorer - no blocking my .swf files. No Media Player - no worries
about DMA. No Messenger - no problems. Have a good day y'all...

I've had the same experience with .SWF files... Once SP2 was installed,
they would never again play in Explorer, or Internet Explorer... Didn't
matter if I told it to "Allow" them, didn't matter if Security was dropped
almost to nothing... They were dead in the water, just a blank white
screen.

Strange, I didn't have any problem with .swf files. Perhaps
installing a new copy or version of Macromedia Flash would cure
the problem. Or maybe not.

Doug

I went back to sp1. I tried the macromedia flash 8, that didn't help either.
If they don't do something about it in the next service pack when they quit
supporting xp pro, I'll either go with Linux or go buy a Mac. Sad too, cause
I really liked Internet Explorer. Maybe Bill will figure out one day that if
it ain't broke don't fix it. Maybe not.

Ponder this. SP2 has been out for almost a year. Millions on millions of
installations. Only your system won't play SWF files. I'd say it isn't
SP2, but something else on your system isn't compatible.

SP2 will install on almost all machines if you install it on a fresh
installation of XP. If you install it on an older installation of XP,
especially one that has anti-virus and other security software on it, your
chances are not so good. It fails on a lot of machines.

My wife installed and then had to back out SP2, but when we did a fresh
install of XP, we were able to install SP2, and it has been working fine for
some time now.

SP2 is good and you should install it if you can, but if has already failed,
I wouldn't try it again unless and until you do a fresh install of XP.

This group show THOUSANDS of reported problems with SP2.
This clown claims one person in the history of the world ever had a problem.

Take your pick.

First, note that there is no *this* group here. The thread is crossposted to
five different newsgroups.

More important, realize two things:

1. If you're reading about problems here, this where people come with their
problems, not with their successes. You get a very distorted view of what's
going on in the real world here; as someone once said, "hang around a
transmission shop and you will think that all cars have transmission
problems."

2. Most problems, by far, that people report here--whether or not they are
SP2-related--have nothing to do with defects in the software. They result
from people's ignorance, from bad or inadequate hardware, from old drivers,
from viruses, from spyware, and so on. And except for very rare situations,
they always get a fix for their problems, and in most cases, that fix is a
very simple one to implement.

That pretty clearly seems to say that one person on the planet has the

doesn't know what he is talking about)

How does what you said in any way refute what he and I originally said?

I reported the same problem in detail to these newsgroups and to Microsoft
telephone technical support for most of a year. It was precisely
reproducible. Back when I was doing software professionally I would have
given my paycheck for a reproducible bug. In the end there was never a
fix for this. (Check any of the long list of postings I made to the
xp general newsgroup with all the supposed causes, all the testing of
these and that none of these ever worked if you want to see details.)

LOTS of people have reported problems with Windows Explorer, if we limit
the discussion to just the problems that SP2 caused with that. Only a
handful of causes have ever been tracked down. I suspect that a fair
proportion of the Windows Explorer causes were ever resolved.

But it is easy to blame it on the user, or the ever popular spyware
and viruses. Who can ever convince someone that isn't the case.

I reported another SP2 bug having to do with Windows Explorer corrupting
the file sort order. This was reproduced by layer after layer in India
and bumped again and again up the levels of techs. Finally it was
actually reported to Microsoft, and was never heard of again.

I wish i had read this befor i installed .Nothing but grief here now and not
a computer genius.. so im in a no win situation here .. Anyone any ideas ??
