Search has changed

I did some poking about in the registry: seems that the search assistant
which we all came to know and love was actually an MSN link. MSN had
recently deleted that link while they try to push their new search engine:
deaktop search or somesuch....I tried it....what a mess! Any idea how we
can browbeat MSN into returning the old assistant?

I knew I hadn't changed anything to cause the search to change. My nasties
files (two of them) had to do with smilies, that I tried and then removed
through add and remove, only they weren't removed until I was directed to
use killbox and what files to kill.
With so many people using other search methods, I don't know if MSN would
listen to us. I think I'll just look around for another search agent that I
like and can live with. I don't like google so, I may be looking for
awhile. But thanks for the information, it is good to know that it isn't my
computer that is messed up.

Hi Anna :-)

I have used this one for some time and like it very well. It uses a variety
of search engines and so it has a wide search range. It's free, and easy to
use. Does not come with a lot of problems that Google and Yahoo toolbars
create. You might take a look at it and see if it will provide the various
search features you would like.

Download – Basic (Free)

(works with IE and Netscape)

Hope this helps.

my search has changed. no longer get any options when i hit customize in the
search pane. just says "loading search settings" started on one computer a
few days ago, now i have this on 3 computers . no virus, no spyware, no
crap! this is a problem that has cropped up from autoupdate. i spent mucho
time checking what had happened. it is not on my side folks.

running xp sp2
ie 6 sp2

this is a job for microsoft!

You have that correct. More and more people are having the same problem.
My old computer isn't used very much, but I do try to keep it updated. So
when this computer's search changed I checked the old one to see if maybe I
had some how changed something. It was the same as the new one. The
customize didn't work like it used to. I am sure that it has to do with
something that Microsoft has changed. I don't see any new updates on either
computer, just prior to the problem, so I 'm thinking it is on Microsoft's
site, not our computers.

You can add another to the list. In fact I tried al remedies offered by Jan
I| and things got worse. Considering Copernic as suggested by Jan.

I have IE 6 sp2 running on winxp. I use the search button always when I
search. I like the fact that it opens on the left of the screen so I can
try each link in the main window with out hitting the back button.
Something changed the search feature. Now when I click on it, it opens the
search panel, but the whole panel has changed, the next thing is greyed out.
When I click on customize, I have tried all three options and nothing ever
changes in the main search panel. I know I am not explaining this very
well, but I hope some one knows what I am talking about. I don't like the
search assistant thing. I like to start with one search engine, then click
next to cycle thru all of the search engines. How can I change this back?
I am not aware of any down loads that would have caused this change. I did
go to the windows update yesterday, but other than that, I haven't
downloaded anything..
Thanks for your help.

any word on this search options problem, someone has got to know something by
now

Hi Angie :-)

Try the Copernic. The Google and Yahoo toolbars are known to cause various
problems with IE, especially, the Yahoo toolbar. Copernic uses a
combination of all the leading search engines, including Google. It is the
only one I use, and I do a lot of research.

Yea, I'm a bit fed up with trying. It's not a virus or spyware. It's
Microsoft. They figure if they annoy us enough with the screw up, we will
download the new IE 7 and give it a shot. lol To go around it, I
installed
Yahoo and Google toolbars. It seems less frustrating than the small
useless
search bar we are left with.

I followed the instructions in another post and now my search is working fine
again, except now all the search results are showing in the main window, not
the side bar. Is there anyway to fix this? I would just like my search
results to show ONLY in the side bar.
