Hi Anna :-)

Try disabling anything Norton and see if that helps. If not, try doing a
system restore to a date and time prior to the problem starting. And in the
old one if you have SR on it too.

Hope this helps.

I done all that has been suggested and still has not fixed the problem. So
I started my old computer to check the settings on it. It has changed
also. I rarely use the old computer, but try to start it once a week or so
to make sure that the virus and windows software is up to date. Well low
and behold the search pane has changed in it also. I have not surfed the
web with it in a very long time.
So at this point I am assuming that either windows or norton auto updates
are the problem. But I don't know how to find what happened.

you and Anna are seeing, and you aren't providing much detail about your

I have IE 6 sp2 running on winxp. I use the search button always when
I
search. I like the fact that it opens on the left of the screen so I
can
try each link in the main window with out hitting the back button.
Something changed the search feature. Now when I click on it, it
opens
the search panel, but the whole panel has changed, the next thing is
greyed out. When I click on customize, I have tried all three options
and
nothing ever changes in the main search panel. I know I am not

about. I don't like the search assistant thing. I like to start with
one search engine, then click next to cycle thru all of the search
engines. How can I change this back?
I am not aware of any down loads that would have caused this change.
I
did go to the windows update yesterday, but other than that, I haven't

Thanks for your help.

Definitely sounds like a hijackware problem, Anna. When all else fails,
HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

I had already ran Ad-Aware and Spybot, neither found anything. I
downloaded and ran the programs from the links that you provided and
there is no change at all. I am hesitant to the last mainly because
nothing is showing up in bold. And what do I use to back up the registry?

Hi Anna :-)

Sometimes the Search or other file or folders can become corrupted, and
they need to be recreated.

First try the following:

How to reset the Internet Explorer Search engine to default settings?
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#ResetSearch

In order to restore you default Search functions, download and run the
program below. You will have to redo any customized features you may
have added afterward.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/RestoreSearch2.REG

Download the fix - Reset Search:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/IEFIX.reg
This will restore your default Search functionality. However, if you
had any custom adjustments you have made will have to re-select them.

If still no joy.....

Courtesy of Tony Klein, MS MVP:

This will restore the Windows defaults for a whole lot of Search related
registry entries.

CAUTION: BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST!

Close IE, copy the bold to Notepad, save as Search.reg (save as 'all
files',
and doubleclick. Answer 'yes' when prompted to add the contents of
Search.reg to the Registry:

your system and get back on track.

Heads up. Once you update to IE7 you will no longer have a search pane.

Ok, simple instructions on how to control Search in IE6 here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/personalize.mspx

If the *next* button is greyed out *after* conducting a search, it could be
because English(US) has been removed from the list of available languages.
Go to tools\internet options\general {languages}. Make sure that English
(US) is installed, and that it is at the top of your list.

Possible fixes:

Cannot change search providers after clicking search:

this will show you how to get them back):

Thanks for the additional information, Sandi. This would make sense as to
the problem. There does seem to be a growing number of people getting this
same problem. With the number of people installing and then uninstalling
IE7, which do not return IE to it's original state for everyone, it could be
the cause and not any Windows update as they originally suspected.

Hi Anna :-)

Thank you for the update. Your symptoms being similar to those experienced
by folks who have installed and then uninstalled the IE7 Beta2 Public
Preview version, it was a good idea to cover to check that direction as
well.

I am continuing to follow your progress in the AumHa forum, and it appears
that you are being helped very well by the experts there, and why I
recommended that you post your log there. I will continue to monitor your
progress there, and check back here as well.

From what I have observed, there have been many replies to your original
post, including your responses. Please be aware that the people who man all
the forums, like those of us who work the newsgroups, are all volunteers,
and we provide assistance when we can. Also, responders are from all over
the world, and all different times. Please be assured that the people who
are assisting you at AumHa are experts, and among the very best in this
field, so be patient and work with them. The problem you have is not a
simple one, and yes, I understand that you want to use the computer again,
and that you want all as it was. But, you have to realize that it was you
that picked up the nasty scumware on your system from somewhere that you
went on your computer, therefore, you will have to help them help you clean
it up before you can get any of your druthers again.

If you don't want to take the time to clean your machine, then you can
simply wipe the hard drive to make sure the scumware is totally gone, and
then just reinstall your windows program from scratch from the Install CD.
The choice is yours. <g>

Hope this helps.

I am continuing to follow your progress in the AumHa forum, and it appears
that you are being helped very well by the experts there, and why I
recommended that you post your log there. I will continue to monitor your
progress there, and check back here as well.

You're doing a good job, hang in there and let them guide you through the
process and you'll soon get your system back up to par. :-)

I did not update to IE7. I don't do betas if I can help it. I don't
think the just doing the regular windows updates would change it, would
it? The link that you provided has a picture of just what I had and want
back. It is the one under Search engine shenanigans.
The guys over there are still working on it.

Heads up. Once you update to IE7 you will no longer have a search pane.

Ok, simple instructions on how to control Search in IE6 here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/personalize.mspx

If the *next* button is greyed out *after* conducting a search, it could
be because English(US) has been removed from the list of available
languages. Go to tools\internet options\general {languages}. Make sure
that English (US) is installed, and that it is at the top of your list.

Possible fixes:

Cannot change search providers after clicking search:

How to use search assistant (note, categories can be manually
'removed' - this will show you how to get them back):

I have IE 6 sp2 running on winxp. I use the search button always
when I
search. I like the fact that it opens on the left of the screen so I
can try each link in the main window with out hitting the back
button.
Something changed the search feature. Now when I click on it, it opens
the search panel, but the whole panel has changed, the next thing is
greyed out. When I click on customize, I have tried all three
options
and nothing ever changes in the main search panel. I know I am not
explaining this very well, but I hope some one knows what I am talking
about. I don't like the search assistant thing. I like to start with
one search engine, then click next to cycle thru all of the search
engines. How can I change this back?
I am not aware of any down loads that would have caused this
change.
I
did go to the windows update yesterday, but other than that, I haven't
downloaded anything..
Thanks for your help.

Hi LAH :-)
I ran a free scan I found here: http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.
Nothing
showed up. I downloaded Spybot and ran it - absolutely nothing. I had
already run Adaware, again nothing but some cookies that I eliminated.
Didn't help.

I'm giving it up for the evening. I'll check back and see here tomorrow.
Thanks!

While a good pre-test, it is not a full scan as the one recommended in the
information provided for Anna by the experts helping her here.
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=18482

You might find it very helpful to follow along with that thread and avail
youself of the information being provided there to be sure your system is
clean as well, although, don't hijack the thread if you would like
assistance as well. Post a new thread and they will be happy to assist you
on a personal basis. Although your symptoms may be the same, the cause
could be different, but, at least you would have the correct tools and
information to be sure your system is clean.

Be aware, your Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware,
worms, etc., and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such
as AdAware and SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must
also be run in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan
all files. Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does
not mean your system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean
your machine. Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can
replicate themselves repeatedly on reboot, or mutate, if not removed
properly. You must also use HiJackThis to help get rid of some files that
cannot be removed by other programs.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply to my post, "Search Function Changed". The problems
seem almost identical. However, now the customize search setting seems to
be stall - I just get Loading search settings. I can't change the search
engine at all now. I did delete all but a few cookies that I could ID.
No
idea if that caused the additional problem or not.

I too have not downloaded IE7 as I don't think it will work on W98SE. My
neighbor also has a computer that is showing the exact same symptoms.

I ran Hijackthis but will wait to see what results you get before I
post
to
the other forum.

Thank you. I learned the hard way about trying betas. (win3.0) Do
the
folks over at AumHa have set hours that they are online? I posted my log
last night and still have had no answer. I'd like to be able to use the
computer again. And I sure would like to get the search back to the way
it
was. (see the picture that robear posted in AumHa.)
Thanks once again for your help.

Hi Anna :-)

Thank you for the update. Your symptoms being similar to those
experienced

Public

They spent several days working with me on it. I appreciate their help.

I was following the thread there. I agree they gave it a good go. The
symptoms are exactly like mine and my neighbor's. I'm beginning to believe
it is not a hijack attempt but something to do with Microsoft itself. Does
anyone have a recommendations about a search toolbar to download?

It is really too bad that this search has changed. It was a nice handy one
to use. Maybe if we just hang in there someone will figure out a fix for
it.
