I have IE 6 sp2 running on winxp. I use the search button always when I
search. I like the fact that it opens on the left of the screen so I can
try each link in the main window with out hitting the back button.
Something changed the search feature. Now when I click on it, it opens the
search panel, but the whole panel has changed, the next thing is greyed out.
When I click on customize, I have tried all three options and nothing ever
changes in the main search panel. I know I am not explaining this very
well, but I hope some one knows what I am talking about. I don't like the
search assistant thing. I like to start with one search engine, then click
next to cycle thru all of the search engines. How can I change this back?
I am not aware of any down loads that would have caused this change. I did
go to the windows update yesterday, but other than that, I haven't
downloaded anything..
Thanks for your help.

I am having a similar search Problem, My search pane has changed on me
without a way or knowledge to change it back, It was the one that had the
multi options, you know... Web page,person,buissness,map.. but now it has
changed to only the Web page and searching from the address bar no matter
what i try to chang from the customize page or "internet options" on the
search companion side when I change to that. I really would like to know how
to get that all back because it was really handy to have all of that on one
button.. Anybody have any ideas.. I really could use them, I tried the page
on microsoft website but all the did was show me what I wanted but now to get
back to it from where I was. I am running XP with IE 6 or 7 I can't remeber
with all of those updates that they send out wich number we are up to now.any
help and I would be most grateful.

Hi Anna :-)

Sometimes the Search or other file or folders can become corrupted, and they
need to be recreated.

First try the following:

How to reset the Internet Explorer Search engine to default settings?
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#ResetSearch

In order to restore you default Search functions, download and run the
program below. You will have to redo any customized features you may have
added afterward.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/RestoreSearch2.REG

Download the fix - Reset Search:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/IEFIX.reg
This will restore your default Search functionality. However, if you had
any custom adjustments you have made will have to re-select them.

If still no joy.....

This will restore the Windows defaults for a whole lot of Search related
registry entries.

CAUTION: BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST!

Close IE, copy the bold to Notepad, save as Search.reg (save as 'all files',
and doubleclick. Answer 'yes' when prompted to add the contents of

Ok, I made all of the changes and it didn't change the search thing in any
way.
I thought that when I clicked on customize it took you to a page that let
you choose the search engines that you wanted to use. I am only offered
three things to choose from.
1. Use search assistant - allows you to customize your search settings
2. Use one search service - allows you to choose a single search service
3. use Search Companion - includes step-by step options that help you
refine your search
None of these get me the old search setting.

Hi Anna :-)

Please see my last response. It is very likely that your problem is being
caused by some type of hijackware or malware on your system. If that is the
case, then you will not be able to resolve the problem without first
removing the cause.

Hope this helps.

I am having the same problem (on xp professional sp2). It's seems to be
happening to many others as well. I do not have the IE 7 but the problem
seems to have happened around the same time they released it. Maybe it has
something to do with automatic updates. I have done hijack/spyway/malware,
virus and registry cleaning. I've reinstalled the search assistant and did
all the steps that everyone suggested. I've gone as far as uninstalling the
security updates since that were installed since 1/06. Nothing has helped.

Hi Angie :-)

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this resolves your problem then you are still infected. If not, then try
the following:

Try IEFix: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

If still no joy, do a repair/reinstall of your IE:

First, disable your AV:

The section

Explorer 6 works on earlier versions of Windows.

You will need to uninstall WinXP SP2 from Control Panel -> Add/Remove
Programs and then reinstall Service Pack 2. Follow the information here:

I done all that has been suggested and still has not fixed the problem. So
I started my old computer to check the settings on it. It has changed also.
I rarely use the old computer, but try to start it once a week or so to make
sure that the virus and windows software is up to date. Well low and behold
the search pane has changed in it also. I have not surfed the web with it
in a very long time.
So at this point I am assuming that either windows or norton auto updates
are the problem. But I don't know how to find what happened.

Yea, I'm a bit fed up with trying. It's not a virus or spyware. It's
Microsoft. They figure if they annoy us enough with the screw up, we will
download the new IE 7 and give it a shot. lol To go around it, I installed
Yahoo and Google toolbars. It seems less frustrating than the small useless
search bar we are left with.

Hi Anna :-)

Try disabling anything Norton and see if that helps. If not, try doing a
system restore to a date and time prior to the problem starting. And in the
old one if you have SR on it too.

Hope this helps.

I've already tried restore. No go, it is still the same. This computer is
fairly new and I have hours of family research on it. I am not willing to
take the chance of losing all of that.
I am really ticked at what ever Microsoft slipped in on their updates. I am
fairly certain that Norton's update would not mess with my search fields in
IE.
I to have installed google although I dislike it.

I have been complaing about this problem myself in another group! Microsoft
has definetly changed the search! Either thru an auto update or I suspect
just when you click the search open, it pulls from their site. They can make
it do whatever they want! I fix computers for a living and have been getting
calls about this all week. And I cant fix it!! It is not spyware or a virus
either.

Hi Anna :-)

Can you find the last update installed and uninstall it through the
Add/Remove Programs? You can check the update History on the update website
and perhaps see which ones were last installed, then check and see if they
are in the list in Add/Remove Programs and uninstall them.

However, if a system restore did not resolve the problem, you will need to
backup all your research and other data and do a repair/reinstall of your
IE. Be aware, doing a repair will not remove any scumware that is on your
hard drive. Thus, it the repair does not resolve the problem, then you have
some type of malware at work that needs to be removed in order to resolve
the problem. Also, there are variations of some types of malware that can
replicate itself repeatedly if not removed properly. If you have not yet
run the detection and removal tools that I have already provided according
to the instructions, then you should do so before trying the repair to make
sure that your system is fully clean.

Hope this helps.

fairly certain that Norton's update would not mess with my search fields
in
IE.
I to have installed google although I dislike it.

Hi Anna :-)

Try disabling anything Norton and see if that helps. If not, try doing a
system restore to a date and time prior to the problem starting. And in
the old one if you have SR on it too.

Hope this helps.

I done all that has been suggested and still has not fixed the problem.
So I started my old computer to check the settings on it. It has changed
also. I rarely use the old computer, but try to start it once a week or
so to make sure that the virus and windows software is up to date. Well
low and behold the search pane has changed in it also. I have not surfed
the web with it in a very long time.
So at this point I am assuming that either windows or norton auto
updates are the problem. But I don't know how to find what happened.

I have IE 6 sp2 running on winxp. I use the search button always when I
search. I like the fact that it opens on the left of the screen so I
can try each link in the main window with out hitting the back button.
Something changed the search feature. Now when I click on it, it opens
the search panel, but the whole panel has changed, the next thing is
greyed out. When I click on customize, I have tried all three options
and nothing ever changes in the main search panel. I know I am not
explaining this very well, but I hope some one knows what I am talking
about. I don't like the search assistant thing. I like to start with
one search engine, then click next to cycle thru all of the search
engines. How can I change this back?
I am not aware of any down loads that would have caused this change. I
did go to the windows update yesterday, but other than that, I haven't
downloaded anything..
Thanks for your help.

Hi Rick :-)

Have you tried tracking down the last updates installed on those machines to
see which one might have caused the problem, if any, and see if they can be
uninstalled. Or tried a System Restore or repair?

Hope this helps.

I have been complaing about this problem myself in another group! Microsoft
has definetly changed the search! Either thru an auto update or I suspect
just when you click the search open, it pulls from their site. They can
make
it do whatever they want! I fix computers for a living and have been
getting
calls about this all week. And I cant fix it!! It is not spyware or a
virus
either.

Hi Angie :-)

Try the Copernic. The Google and Yahoo toolbars are known to cause various
problems with IE, especially, the Yahoo toolbar. Copernic uses a
combination of all the leading search engines, including Google. It is the
only one I use, and I do a lot of research.

Program information
http://www.copernic.com/en/products/agent/basic.html
Download - Basic (Free)
http://www.copernic.com/en/products/agent/download.html
(works with IE and Netscape)

Hope this helps.
