Pricelessware CD

I got an email asking if you can include my DIR2HTML program
http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/freeware/dir2html/

You certainly can; thanks very much for choosing it.

By the way, I've got a little program that might help out with the design
of your CD. It pops up a dialog box and lets the user decide whether they
want to

1) View CD in web browser
2) Open CD directory listing

When inserted into autorun.inf this lets the CD be more user-friendly;
someone can select option 1 and the default web browser will launch and
display index.html out of the root of the CD.

If you need something like this let me know, and I'll send you my webcd.exe
program (freeware, but not on my site). I've used this to package CDs for
friends and family.

Hello Jem,

That sounds promising. Please do email the program to me.

I discovered you have a *second* program on the Pricelessware list (I
haven't got them all memorized yet): SetBrowser

Does ACF have your permission to include that program as well on the
PL2004 CD?

So far I have omitted 63 MB of files "for cause" (cannot be
distributed). Most of that is Outlook Express.

The files that were downloaded for OS *other* than Windows total 174 MB.
ISTM that I will *have* to exclude those files to get the total below
700 MB.

With the above exclusions the remaining files total about 632 MB.

I still have some checking to do. Below is the current list of included
and omitted programs. (asked) means I have emailed the author and am
waiting to hear. I have to check on-line and/or email the authors about
the programs that don't have a note in parentheses.

I don't think all of these programs need to be on a cd. 1by1,
Neutron both about 50- 60 kb less than a 2 min download on a lousy dialup
connection. Certainly people could download those on their own. maybe you
should pick a size say 3 megs and over to put on the disk. A large number
of these programs I either have, have tried and dumped (1st Page 2000 for
one) or just have no need for. Others, like WinAmp Classic seem to get
updated once sometimes twice a week, or at least monthly and I don't use it
either. I was looking at programs like Open Office, which I was lucky
enough to get on a mag cd and didn't keep, but I'd still like to try
Ragtime Solo hoping it's better than OO and doesn't need Sun Java. It just
seems like your getting a 20# bag of potatoes with only say 5# you can use,
if that. I realize that to have someone pick and choose what they would
want would be a real hassle for the cd sender and think the cd IS a good
thing just not sure that all those small programs need to be included,
although they do seem to be the best of the lot. Just my 2 canadian pennies
not a complaint. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood because it snowed again
today.

As one of the cd volunteers, I don't mind if we go with a 2 cd package.
Burning a second will not take any extra effort for me.

It's finally *starting* to look like spring here. Your turn will come -
eventually. ;)

I haven't tried to do a breakdown by size but suspect that excluding the
small programs wouldn't save all that much space.

I agree that having the big programs like OpenOffice.org on the PL2004
CD will be especially helpful. OTOH - I hope copies of the CDs will be
given to lots of people who *haven't* discovered the joys of freeware.
They probably will want to start *small*.

There is another consideration. . .

ISTM that some people using the Pricelessware CD will be computer
newbies so. . . we need to KISS. . .

I revised the Pricelessware program descriptions - file names are now
*explicitly* shown for the Windows files (most were only shown in the DL
URLs before). Each program has a directory for its files. There are a
few extra files (Irfanview plug-ins etc.) - those are in subdirectories.

The file names for other OS are *not* shown in the PL descriptions. I
don't have all files for all programs for other OS. IMO additional
explanation and indexing for other OS files would be needed to avoid
confusion. That would be time consuming. My preference is to stay with
one CD this year - and finish it ASAP.

Susan,
If we need to KISS, I can start out your way right now... Okay, stick
with one if you think appropriate. ASAP sounds good,

I agree with you, Susan.

Now quit your lollygagging and get that CD ready! Sheesh, all this time
wasted with things like eating and sleeping, I mean *really*, at least try
to get a little work done. ;)

Yup - those dang authors keep releasing new versions :). . . ASAP so I
don't have to download *too* many more files. . .

It's hard to match the standard you downloaders set. :)

I can give up eating - seems to be harder to do without sleep. . .
Sheesh, you and Karen sure are hard taskmasters. ;)

I just uploaded a new page. The PW_CD column has these notations:

INCLUDED (permitted by the EULA or the author has given permission)
OMITTED (redistribution is not allowed)
asked (I have emailed the author requesting permission)

If you sort the page on the PW_CD column you will see about 50 programs
without *any* notation.

It is unclear from the information I have whether or not those programs
can be distributed and I don't have (good) email addresses for the authors.

If you use one of these programs please check the EULA, readme etc. and
post any useful information you find.

and/or

If you *have* an author's email address please email it to me (remove
whoi) or to the Pricelessware links button or mung the address and post it.

TIA :)

We are entering the home stretch! My goal is to start burning PL2004 CDs
on Wednesday (or Thurday).

Note: If I don't have redistribution info for a program by that time I
will omit the program from the PL2004 CD.

My distribution list (below) includes the program downloaders and those
who offered to help begin the distribution. The planned distribution
process is here:

If I don't have your snail mail address (and you still wish to
participate in the initial distribution) please email it to me now

I need addresses for:

Fair enough. We can always try again next year.

How do I volunteer ?

After the first group of volunteer burners receive their PL2004 CDs you
request a CD - then you can volunteer to burn copies for other people.

<q>
Distribution of the CD:

After the CD is created a few copies will be burned and sent to
alt.comp.freeware participants who have offered to help begin the
distribution process. (NOTE: an ISO of the CD may be available for
download if details can be worked out.)

Further distribution will be made in response to requests posted in the
alt.comp.freeware newsgroup as follows:

1. A requestor posts a request for a copy of the CD.

2. A volunteer (anyone who has previously obtained a copy of the CD can
volunteer) posts a response agreeing to burn a copy of the CD for the
requestor.
</q>

(See the web page for all the details.)
