Payware worth every penny!

  • Thread starter Thread starter casioculture

for me:

1) Borland Delphi (Beats MS VC++)
2) EditPlus (Top-notch!)
3) Total Commander (I'd be crazy without this!)
4) Opera (Nice)
5) Adobe Photoshop (What else can one say?)

this is, infact the only S/W I have...

Ok ok, I know this is a freeware newsgroup; that's precisely why I'm
asking here. You guys must have a hint of prudence (thrift?) to use
like freebies. So, you're good to ask.

What payware do you regard worth every penny?

There are many but two spring to mind...
1. First and foremost, WhereIsIt...a superior database manager. I
use it mainly for archived programs.
http://www.whereisit-soft.com/

2. MP3Rat. Also a DB manager but for MP3s. I have tried a *LOT* of
MP3 database managers; this is a *good* one...fast, functional and
flexible. Far better than most. Its one negative aspect is that it
creates a sizeable DB file - about 17,000KB for 38,000 MP3s - but that
size contributes both to its speed and flexibility. I don't use it but
probably would if I were starting over.

Ditto for their bookmarks manager - Powermarks. Same search engine
behind both. I've tried all the freeware and nothing comes close.

For me...

1. total unisntall 3 (essential for windows software junkies; i used
to dread trying software but this TU3 makes it less of a worry)
2. acronis true image (superb; no longer worry about windows
re-installs)
3. O&O defrag (keeps my file fragmentation at zero)
4. eset nod32 (very good anti-virus)

Wel most payware I can't live without, are mostly for business use:

1) MS Office Premium (Including Access)
Open office is just still too risky, besides, noting beats a good MS-Access
database for datakeeping.

2) Dreamweaver. Just one of the examples of saving me quite some times

3) McAfee antivirus (corporate version, home version is not as good)

4) Futher I've paid for Photofiltre (What can i say? Who needs Adobe
Photoshop By the time it is finnished loading, I've already edited the
picture the way I like it in Photofiltre)

5) Paperless printer. With the nagware gone, it is absolutly the bet to file
printer i've seen.

6) Norton Ghost The only package of them lot that more as 100 times has paid
itself back :-)

They're one of the most obnoxious usenet type. There's something
inherently stupid in making a post to publicly declare their *plonk* of
someone.

Netlimiter.

Can set download transfer rate limits for applications or for single
connection. Statistics too.

Support is crap but the product is good. Pricey at $30.

1. Acronis TrueImage - Easy, fast and exact
2. Servant Salamander 2.5b7 - The best file manager (try it TC diehards
;-)
3. Winrar - Purchased long ago. Free upgrades for life.
4. Agent - purchased before there was decent freeware.
5. ACDSee classic
6. Nero - Free with my burner but I would purchase.

An interesting question to everyone above is why do you class the
software listed as "payware you couldn't do without"?

I appreciate things like business s/w, Dreamweaver for example, can
speed up development time hence its cheaper in the long run (time =
money and all that). Have used it quite a bit, have also used NVU too.
But, other types of software .. is it people can't do without as
Freeware versions are different, you are just used to the interface, or
the working of the Payware version?

I had this conversation with a friend of mine who used a certain
shareware programmers editor which he was going to pay for. I use a
Freeware one. The Freeware one had all the features he needed but he'd
always used the Shareware one and was used to it. He didn't want to
spend a little time (and it wouldn't have been long) getting to know
something new. I wonder if this is one of the main reasons people would
pay for something instead of using a free alternative.

Just a thought

Total Commander. That's it.

I still use version 2.something of Total Uninstall, but it is one of the
greatest I've seen. I may just buy version 3 as the price is reasonable.

1. Quicken (2004 currently)
2. Agent
3. MS Office 2003, mostly Word, Excel and Outlook.
4. Windows XP
5. eZtrust AV from Computer Associates

There may be more, as I've bought quite a few programs.

Why is Payware (OT) being discussed in a Freeware Group?

1. Because some Troll started this thread and now everyone is feeding
it.

2. Now that $ware is being openly discussed in the freeware group it is
no longer appropriate for others to Flame posters who recommend
$ware.

Windows Registry Repair Pro very reasonable price.

Free/trial version only fixes 15 errors at a time but still usable.

Found 1500 errors in my registry!

Bye for now.

I think it is okay to discuss which payware progs we cannot yet replace
by freeware. It enables freeware authors to know where the needs are
which need to be filled. And it is a relevant piece of information for
the readers.

By the way, Norton Ghost is such a program, but a replacement is being
developed G4L, ghost for linux. Let's hope they can develop it to such a
level that makes norton ghost unnecessary.

For this kind of program it doesn't matter what operating system it runs
under, because it is to be run from a live-CD or floppy.

The freeware program Partition Saving already replaces the most important
functionality of ghost, but there are still significant differencies.

Because they have turned this into a chatroom. It's ok to post off
topic stuff as long as you are certain people

Just like in these threads

Subject: Why www.ugroups.com sucks
Subject: Spam sucks
Subject: I'm here. . .
Subject: What Happened To Blinky the Shark (O.T.)
Subject: What software is delightful?
Subject: Webware: RedLightGreen
Subject: Ping Susan for the webware page
Subject: What...?

Ah but they will.

What payware do you regard worth every penny?

Aignes WebsiteWatcher is life changing.

If I was only going to buy 1 program it would be this (nb too bad it
only runs on windows. Better make that 2 programs that need to be
purchased). It used to bother me that I would research a topic and get
up to speed with it, only to find 6 months later I'd forgotten
everything and have to start from scratch. Now that I've been using this
for a couple of years, it checks 700+ webpages a day for me, and I only
have to look at the 30 - 50 that have changed. Once you learn to use
regex filters and macros, you have the power to check emails, forums,
rss feeds, sites that require multiple clicks and logins etc. I use the
"run external program on change" option to fire up lynx, grab the site,
then use sed to get the links I want, then use cmd line downloader to
queue up the files. Using this method, my usb flash disk gets daily
automatic downloads of stinger, avasts repair tool, and trendmicros
sysclean and patterns file - EVEN when the filenames are changing.
