Ok ok, I know this is a freeware newsgroup; that's precisely why I'm
asking here. You guys must have a hint of prudence (thrift?) to use
like freebies. So, you're good to ask.

What payware do you regard worth every penny?

For me...

1. total unisntall 3 (essential for windows software junkies; i used to
dread trying software but this TU3 makes it less of a worry)
2. acronis true image (superb; no longer worry about windows
re-installs)
3. O&O defrag (keeps my file fragmentation at zero)
4. eset nod32 (very good anti-virus)

O&O is bloated compared to DIRMS AND Buzzsaw...smaller and work just as
well or better.

If by payware you mean shareware, rather than full commercial products
(a la Microsoft Word, etc.), then I must say that the one thing that
really puts me off shareware is the idea of handing over my credit card
details. I've heard enough horror stories about Paypal, too, to know
that I'd never use that in a hundred years.

There's probably some real rip-roaringly good shareware out there at
very reasonable prices; but like I say, I'm very wary of handing out my
credit card information.

Total Recorder
PocoMail
WinZip

(Yeah, yeah: I know people don't actually pay for WinZip, but the basic
deal is that you're supposed to, and ages ago I did.)

Try Filzip. It's freeware, and does everything that I want it to, at least.

Thanks; I'd probably follow that up, but since I paid for WinZip years
ago and it seems to work, I'm not really in the market for a
replacement...

(WinZip -- AFAICT -- still appears to be clean and behaves itself with
no phoning-home nonsense. Not that I've noticed, anyway.)

What payware do you regard worth every penny?CSE HTML Validator. I use the built-in editor to create web pages,
then test for Section 508 and WCAG compliance.

I tried the freeware versions of 602PC Suite, WinPatrol and AI Roboform, and
liked them so much, I decided to reward the programmers by purchasing a
license for their products. I also sent a donation to the makers of Slick
Run.

can, but purchase programs that I like/need.
