Ack! This is not what I wanted to hear. I was hoping you'd say how
strange but cool that it's working now. Oh well, guess I better hang
on to the giftcard for a replacement. So do you think it will start
arcing again, or simply just die?

It will start arcing again and will eventually die if you keep using it enough.

I had a Compaq like that, uneconomic to replace the FBT with
so many discarded monitors around. I just used it on a system
that didnt have the screen on all that much. Then the main monitor
died, so I used that monitor while waiting for the replacement to
show up, and it did eventually go bang and died completely when
I had to use it all day for a couple of days in quite humid weather.
