Same goes for the new US Ambassador to the Great White, eh! ;-) He
went to the Bush school of geography.
But he figures he can
build me a topnotch computer with a DVD writer even, for about $800, which
is a damned good price considering our dollar vs. yours.
Nope!! Just removed the sigs by highlighting and deleting. (G)Peter Seiler said:Heather - 04.07.2005 04:28 :
now the handling looks right with the reposting SIGs with your OE. No
more SIG quotings anymore Fine. THX to OE quotefix as Beauregard
mentioned?
Art said:You need a new large screen monitor??? $800 Canadian = $652 US which
sems awfully high to me. I've seen prices of about $350 at custom
computer shops around here.
Users have problems of one kind or another on all OS.<<I'm running Win 2K Pro (it came with the machines) on a couple of
these "low end" machines, and they are quite nice. They boot up and
shut down quickly, and Win 2K is quite popular among some geeks who
claim it's the best Windows OS you can use. It certainly isn't a "cure
all" for problems users have as can be seen on Windows Win 2K newsgroups.
Which brings me to the question of why you want to "upgrade"?
If Win ME works for you, the worst thing you can do is "fix it"
My wife Peg is still happily using Win ME on our Hp Pavilion and
not have any problems. It has a 900 mhz Intel PIII with only
128 meg RAM and it's quite fast and nice with our DSL service.
No reason to ever downgrade to XP that I can see
I am finding that more and more programs won't work with ME.
Art said:Really? Like which? Are they worth it? Can't you find equivalents?
Never ran into that issue.

Hi Art.....give me a day or so to recall, grin.
Photoshop & Illustrator
being two of them. I don't use them, but when my graphic artist daughter
visits, she needs those to do the editing she wanted to do. Couldn't use
the trials and she was not impressed with PaintShop Pro.
However....there was one the other day that surprised me and damned if I can
remember which one it was. Besides this computer getting old.....so am I!!
The memory is the first to go (or could that be the body, grin).
Anyway.....my CD/RW is not working at the moment, a
and I have a lot of
redundant XP folders on here, which are not causing a problem.
Zone Alarm
keeps giving me errors at shutdown which are also not a problem.....my
printer doesn't load properly every 5th boot (Epson R-200) and a myriad of
little things.
I will reinstall ZAPro and Epson and see if that fixes those two. But if I
have to replace the motherboard or BIOS, it is simply not worth the money.
I can get a new CD/RW
.....but again, is it better to just buy a newer
computer??
I don't have your expertise in building them.
Cheers....Heather

money.
Motherboard or BIOS? What makes you think they need replacing, fer
gawd's sake?
See what I mean? No logic. Just emotion. You're bored with your
old PC and rather than put the small amount of money, and larger
amounts of time and effort into fixing it, you'd rather give it away
to someone like me.
I'm just pulling your leg to some extent. I certainly know
the feeling. It was time for me recently to get some brand new
hardware as well. Got tired of fiddling with some old junkers
I had been picking up for nothing. And two hard drives in my
collection of spare drives tested as going sour by utils from
the h.d. vendors.
But when it comes to Windows, I certainly find no need for
the latest and greatest from MS.
Mine was free, so figured I might as well
dual boot.
But I would have
upgraded eventually. This WinME O/S has served me well for 4.5 years. Not
about to junk it. Will use it as a backup for the new one.
Cheers....the other Senior Citizen, lol.
Art said:That I wouldn't do. Much better to have separate machines with the
separate OS IMO. Also, doing a upgrade type install over a legacy OS
isn't a good idea. Best to do a fresh install on a freshly formatted
and partitioned drive.
Having it as a backup _machine_ (and not just OS) would be better
IMO, if you have room in the house, and a spare monitor.
Hey....I like that!! And yes, it is so true. Doesn't it amaze you whenSeasoned and better Citizens "Inside every old person is a young one
wondering what in the hell happened". I love that one. It's so true!
Something I noticed.....since we are now in the latter half of our lives,
doesn't the time just whiz by?? Even when you are retired? Where in hell
do the weeks and months go. When we were 20, they inched along.....now they
are doing 120 mph.
