How the nickname Swansea Jack began

Hi All (well Swansea Jacks I suppose)
Do North Dock, South Dock, Weaver's dock still exist - no I know they don't.
Left for Cornwall in 1972, but I know No 39 Watkins St exists because my uncle still lives there - bought by my parents for £250 in 1958.
Watkins St definately working (but I mean working) class. Now
move 200 yards west and you are in Mount Pleasant - as middle class as you could get - but that was 30 odd years ago.
What's it like now?
Cheers

I've NEVER been to Swansea. Am I missing anything? ;)

Nope

Oh, I'm in for it now for sure... ;)

Catherine Zeta Jones was born just down the road at The Mumbles, that's, uh, interesting isn't it? :)

I once went to a school called Swanzwyk...but thats about as close to Swansea as can be, albeit 9000 miles away or however far that part of Africa is I come from.....:p

We got very lost in Swansea a few years ago, kept circling for about an hour, before we eventually found our destination. Not Swansea's fault of course... but like other areas of S. Wales, sign posting could be better. Now don't all hit me, I live here too, remember :D

I agree:nod: But! it is Swansea`s fault:nod: I now hate going into Swansea as in most Cities and Towns nowadays you just drive O and O I were born in Swansea and now don`t go into the city they [Planning Dept] have made it so bad:wall: one way streets one week>, next week its two way><, the week after it is one way the other way<, So I have given up the mystery tours:D now I shop out of the City just across the road less than half a mile is the Enterprise park and no problems at all Parking/shopping all the main stores are there Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys/Morrisons/Argos/Pcworld/Currys/Maplin/Comet/Etcetera/Etcetera
actually Swansea is a bit of a ghost TOWN Ooooooooooo bet that frightened you:lol:

How the name Swansea Jack began

Hi All
Should have realised the bonkers planners would have wrecked
most small cities in the same ways as Swansea.
Approx 7 years ago tried to visit my Uncle in Watkins Street -
got on the Jersey-Marine dual-carriageway from Port Talbot then took the best part of 30min to get there from the bridge over the river Tawe (less than a mile away).
Incidentally the Luftwaffe found it much easier to find in WW2 - coming down the valley, flares on Kilvey Hill and dropping short of the docks onto what is now Castle Square, higher Oxford St and Kingsway.
It was in 2001 easy to find your way out the other side towards
Llanelli (my place of birth) but not anywhere in Swansea.
Hope it has changed since then!
Good luck Ospreys and Swansea City - no more Vetch Field and St Helen's
hey.
No I don't like change
Cheers

Well it has gotten worse nowadays the main problem is simple but to difficult for the morons trying to work it out. The traffic light sequence is not as it should be. But hey that uses to much brain power of which they have a lack of DOHHHHH Who`s the thickest working here seems to be the moto.....

Some photos.

How the nickname Swansea Jack began

Hi itsme
Please keep it coming - any more photos most welcome.
BTW - very happy Christmas.
Arrived to watch Wales v Scotland at Cardiff Arms Park in 1984 - detoured to Swayne's Eye and found my old school - Oxford Street Boys - no longer there.
found the stubs of the railings around a carpark.
Still think the planners have more idea how to destroy the
grand old place than Hitler.
Cheers
