How do I fix task scheduler?

Well David, I want to thank you and others for the help. I did an "upgrade"
install of XP, (I hate to admit - I have no idea how to configure this thing
to boot directly from the CD) and it appears that the Task Scheduler and
everything else is in pristine condition. It appears that I didn't lose
anything at all. Yippee ;-)) Now I guess I'll have to download all the
updates from WU again.

Ok. But I'd try a full clean boot troubleshooting procedure first.

Thanks for all your help. By the way I've run every conceivable
virus/worm/trojan/adware programme that anyone has ever heard of....plus I
have McAfee Firewall/virusscan/privacy services active at all times.

I'm having (or will after coffee and reading the paper) a look at that
WinSock thing. You did post that it temporary fixes the problem?

Yes, it fixes it, but the next time I boot up I have to do it all over
again. There is obviously a corrupted or missing link in my drive
somewhere. As far as virus/t/adware etc...I'm free right now.
This is the link to the winsockxp repair tool:

David, thanks for all your help. I've run every conceivable tool to remove
viruses/trojans/spyware etc. and I also have full time McAfee
Virusscan/Firewall Plus/Privacy Service installed. The tool I mentioned
fixes things, but only until the next boot and then I start all over again.
When it's run you have to reboot to take effect. If you don't you wont be
able to access the internet at all. The link is:

I guess there is a corrupted and/or missing component somewhere on my disc
which needs replacing or altering.

I downloaded it last night from the link in the first post you mentioned it (the one with no replies).

I won't run it. I open it in Word with the recover Text from any File converter.

There no little registry tweak, it's a gigantic registry tweak. I've been selecting for a minute and I'm a 1/4 of the way through. Decided it wasn't practicable to paste here.

What the program does is

is does the program equivelent of typing in Start Run

ipconfig /release * [this command has a renew as well that the program doesn't do]

and

netsh.exe int ip reset

then merges in two registry files

So you also type in Start Run

ipconfig /release
netsh.exe int ip reset
ipconfig /renew

See if the above fixes it without a boot.

Also try
netsh diag gui
and follow the wizard

The program creates the reg files called
xpwinsock.reg
xpwinsock2.reg in a directory called vbdata somewhere.

Tell me if you have home or pro when you post back and we'll audit or lock the winsock keys. But I suspect the programs might fix.

You're a genius! I wouldn't know where to start! My lids are drooping,
I'll try this in the morning and report back.

I did the start/run things and it didn't fix it. I noticed that the black
screens only appeared briefly and vanished. The wizard failed me on Default
Mail and news...always does because I have a weird mail set-up. It failed
network adapters, not sure why. I have no connection problems.
I'm on XP home sp1.

So I start out with the cmd /k ipconfig /release and follow on from there in
the same window?

Can you enable Window's firewall, then disable Norton's firewall (in that order so a worm can't get you - or go offline to do it).

Does anything change. Both TS and the netsh et al?

The other thing it does is cleans the hosts file (forgot to mention that).

I didn't need to reboot after running it, though I was offline and it was working.

So you log on, run this program and TS starts working but your network doesn't?

Type in Start - Run
%temp%\vbdata

and you'll find the reg files it uses.

Merge the 2 files.

Then in Start Run
%windir%\system32\drivers\etc
and open the file Hosts with notepad and paste the contents.
