How do I fix task scheduler?

Each time I boot up the task scheduler is disabled and it wont start. I
have to run a tweak (winsockxpfix.exe) to get it going. This follows a bad
trojan attack which McAfee Viruscan supposedly got rid of.
The trojan wiped my system restore points (or something did) so I can't
system restore. Registry Mechanic can't fix it. Is there anything I can
do to permanently fix this problem?

Hi

From Start>Run type

services.msc

then scroll down the list to the Task Scheduler Service. Make sure it is
running - if not, right click on it and select Start. Then right click on
it again and select Properties - make sure that the drop down menu is set to
'Automatic'.

If that still doesn't help you could be looking at a 'Repair' install:

Thanks Will, I'll wait to see all replies first. If I do a re-install is
there any particular item that I should pick on the CD or let it do its
thing?

Hi

A reinstall is normally the last resort, but I don't know winsockxpfix.exe
and what it does. Is System Restore working properly now?

Sys. restore is working but will only go to yesterday. That 'fix" was
something I found on one of the discussion groups from Explicit Software
Solutions.

Sorry to sound dumb, where do I find the logfile? FYI in
properties/dependancies it says "this service relies on RPC (remote
procedure call)" not sure why it says that.

In TS - Advanced menu what does the log say, also what does Event Viewer
say.

Would a visit to something like PCDocRX be worth the money or are those
things not worth it?

No I'm a lone home user. RPC is started but I know I don't need it and why
is Task Scheduler relying on it in TS properties(see my other post)?

Noone has found a solution to this. The error is also known as 1721 (in
Event Log). It's RPC that is out of resources.

You can try this (File Export before you delete)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;327649

Is RPC working. Are you on a network?

I am a lone home user...no network. The RPC is on but not needed obviously.
Why would TS (in properties/dependencies) the TS rely on RPC?
Might that be the problem.
Another ?.... if I have to reinstall XP should I do it using sfc /scannow?
I did that once before and preserved virtually all the programmes and files.

SFC just makes sure all files are the correct version and aren't corrupted. Always worth a try. TS is a network application. A lot of components rely on RPC.

Just out of curiosity I did the sfc /scannow and it asked me to insert my XP
CD. I did but not sure whether to do tell it do a full installation or
what. Options are full, optional components or other tasks... I'm
relatively new to the PC world and these things kinda scare me ;-)

None of the above, close it. SFC just wants to read the disk. Was SFC still running when you inserted the disk? One would imagine it would cancel the autoplay.

It's stopped now. If (I hope I don't have to) I reinstallI'll follow the
advice in Kelly's site under Repair the XP Installation.
Thanks for all the help.

I tried that link. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Rpc.. there
is no Internet item.

OK - did that, the problem persists. I guess I'm going to have to to a
repair XP. At which juncture, I can't face this for the rest of the day.
I'm off to the bar for a few beers.. Meanwhile, hopefully, a miracle will
occur...LOL

Ok. But I'd try a full clean boot troubleshooting procedure first.
