GCSE's..

Oh very well done Michael :thumb: must be a relief to have your results at last. Hope you can sort something out regarding the maths result that you need ... although speaking as someone who didn't get on terribly well with maths herself:rolleyes: I'm impressed :D

Thanks Taffy :)

I didn't really worry or think about them over the holidays , but i am surprised!

I don't regret anything though, i honestly tried my best and even if I could do maths again, I would still get a C. I now realise the importance of individual teachers; they really do make the difference.

Well done Michael!!! I think there's a good chance they will let you do computing at A-Level, as you were very close and they want as many people on board as possible - just be sure not to take no for an answer ;) I know for a fact that most places will take someone if they miss it by a small amount if they are passionate about the subject.

Thanks Ian, I need some reassuring :)

I just phoned up, and they seemed to be okay with it. They'll call back in a while. Fingers crossed! :D

they'll take you with what you've got, its not that popular and for every kid that does it they'll get money, same with all a levels

michael 118 dont worry about the maths grade you could always do it again?
talk to the college before worrying, may be they can sort something out to enable you to do the course.
and what ever you do Good Luck.:thumb:

Thanks you two :)

I'm much less worried about it now. I just really wanted to do computing :D

i did computing A level (OCR) and you do harldy any maths

:) Thanks for the response everyone!

Me - On the taster day, there was almost no mention of any mathematics involved, none of that Sine Cosine and Tangent rubbish.

I walked the 2 miles or so down to college and they told me that although a place was not guaranteed, I would more than likely get in when i go to enroll, because i got very strong grades elsewhere... I'm pretty much all but in!

All you may need to know is how to do Hexadecimal (power of 16), Binary (power of 2) & Decimal.
All will be easy for someone like you!
It gets harder for oldies like me who left school 20 years ago.

But less us all know how you get on.:thumb:

Good luck Michael, I reckon you'll be ok, I hope so....

My twin daughters got their A level exam results last Thursday.

One got three A's, the other an A, B and C.

So they're both off to Uni, at Bristol & Cardiff (they live in Glastonbury).

One wants to be a teacher, the other a paramedic.

Good Luck Michael, I reckon you'll do alright.
Computer science enrollement levels are falling all around the world & yet the demand is skyrocketing. Graphics is especially a good way to go. The demand for graphics workers (especially for games) is so high that one of my ex-hubby's mates at the uni got a $1mill (US) salary by the time Pixar & Dreamworks had finished fighting over him.
If you haven't already, try talking to the head of computing, not just the college big-wigs. Having him/her pulling for you...

Thank you, feckit, flops and ciri :)

The maths we'll be doing will be new maths to what we've done before. i think they say you really need a B in maths because it shows you CAN do the maths involved. But my grades are strong elsewhere, so hopefully they will understand.

Flops; its great to hear about your daughters doing so well :). I know alot of people that have got amazing results at college, and its very good to see your daughters achieve those results. Best of luck to them both!

Ciri; I'm not worried about the money as such although it would be nice if it brought money., I just have a passion for computers and computing and I would love it to take me into an enjoyable life :) (I may not be that good, but i'm so desperate to learn and learn:D). How is your ex-husbands mates work going, if you still keep contact? I have the enrollment day on the 29th, so i'll be able to talk it through with the computing teachers. If they see how badly i want to be part of it, they'll have no reason to say no!

Well done and I hope you do well in your chosen career.

If you are interested in gaming development etc. you might like to look at sites such as this one.

lol, no, I didn't mean you could get rich (although, as David Attenbourough said.. "I can't believe that I am so lucky as to get to do the thing I love the most, and they PAY me for it!!! ) rather to illustrate the demand there is for the skill. Raymond's friend left at the end of last year, I'm afraid I didn't know him personally so everything I've heard is from Raymond & my kids who all knew him & his wife. Apparently what made him such a catch was because he designed graphics for smoke (one of the hardest things to CG) that was indistinguishable from real footage.
Apparently one of the companies offered him a contract with a very juicy looking few hundred thou & he was about to jump at the chance, but one of the others in the Comp Sci dept said...."mmmm, hang on" & sent a sample of his work to the other & by the time pixar & dreamworks had finished fighting everyones heads were spining.
Since then Peter Jackson has gotten a contract to make a series of xbox LOTR games. Top of the line sort of stuff, which he's come back here to do, so the demand here for graphics workers has gone off this planet. But the level of enrollment in the comp sci department has fallen each year for the last few years & Jackson is having to import graphics artists from all around the world to make the games.

The bottom line really is that comp sci just doesn't sound sexy enough for most first years. & the Uni doesn't promote it at all, despite the fact that Otago CS graduates are in demand all around the world. Most people don't even know the department exists & if you ask them about comp sci they'll think you're talking about IT. Even the Uni switchboard have put me through to IT when I've asked for the computer science department.

:)

Thank you for your encouragement, both of you,

cguil, that link you gave me looks promising, something that i'll have to consider for the future :D.

and ciri, again thanks for such a great response. I had the enrollment, and i did get in! which was brilliant! :D. My teacher said that although the required B in maths was not necessary, it shows you have a logical mind and would be able to cope with computing. It was a very positive, good experience for me and i'm so grateful to be part of the college! i think she did realise my enthusiasm :D

The only negative points however are that; i've been told that getting a C in maths and doing computing usually results in a failure on the course... and i won't be able to do a hardcore programming course at university, if i get that far. Thats quite a heavy blow, but i'm willing to dedicate myself to computing, whatever the cost :D.

I have a basic programming test 2 weeks into college (i start on 6th sept), so if i pass i can stay with computing, and if i fail i'll have to do applied ICT, which would be terrible.

I'm looking forward to it though, i see that test as a chance to prove myself :D.

Anyway thank you for all your responses, i will tell you how it goes when i get there!

michael 118 any idea what the basic programming course consists of?
May be we can offer you some help etc??

She didn't tell me, but i'll use the links you pm'd me :)

all i know is that we'll be using visual basic quite alot.

so maybe C++ or C#?

is this an a-level course ? if it is the only board that i know of that does it is AQA

iirc we did a bit of java and visual basic and covered prolog, assembly, machine code but that was pretty brief and didn't really come up in either exam
