Freeware to Replace My Linksys Router?

No you don't *need* a DMZ. Some folks use one to set up their web
servers etc on the outside of the firewall/defense grid. Having a box
in the DMZ is also useful for doing your own security scanning.

Having said that, I discontinued using a DMZ on my home LAN after about
three months. With IPCop I have never had any reason to think that my
LAN had been penetrated at any time.

I know the feeling of being penetrated. LOL
It's like the IPCop motto sez:
"The packets stop here."

Call me when "the spermies stop here".Well, they stop, and in my case, it
seems they stop right on top of my "eggs".
YW. Setting up IPCop takes maybe 30 minutes. I'd suggest reading thru
the installation manual as well as the Operator's manual at least
twice. The actuall installation script is easy to use and configuration
is fairly straight forward.

I'm reading now. Well. I'm trying to read but Hubby is snaking his
hands.......

STOP THE SPERMIES!!

NP, about the xbox I'm assuming you have a switch to plug into the deal,
or at least a hub, you can just plug the xbox into it, open the ports on
the smoothy, and away you go.

I have the XBox on wireless (not good) off my now dead and long forgotten
Linksys router. I was hoping there would be a way to continue this wireless
connection which brings me to another thing that urinates me off. I had two
guy/dudes come in and pull CAT5 cable to the downstairs where the XBox is
and I have never gotten a connection even when my stupid LSys was working.

I was sick of replacing Hardware routers so I dug out my old P100 and
installed smoothwall.

www.smoothwall.org .

Technically its linux, but in reality its just a computer based
firewall, with php interface to configure like a Linksys etc. etc.
Feels exactly like a router only way more dependable. Piece of cake
to install and maintain, can't recommend it enough.

I've been meaning to try smoothwall. My two routers seemed to constantly
drop connections - especially irc server connections.

Yesterday, I got out an old P120, put two nics in it and installed
smoothwall on it. So far, no dropped connections. I'm still using my router
as a switch.

Smoothwall is a nice product for sure.

Excellent, the only problem I have with it is after about 45 days I
have to reboot because ppoe doesn't disconnect like it should, but
thats definitely not a problem, since you can reboot it from the
webinterface, and it beeps to let you know when its connected.

Glad you enjoy it.

Hmmm, dye or razor?
Either way, we're definitely gonna need both "Before" AND "After" pics
now.

Keep it coming, sweety!
(I love a woman who'll talk dirty.)

You okay? You seem a bit flustered.

Up, down, up, down and you call *me* flustered? Then I see this new "up
hard" drug Celetia (sp??) and the ad says "An erection lasting four hours
needs immediate medical attention."

*WTF?*

Then people want to know why I go to porn sites.

Aaaaaaaaaghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Most of the little hardware routers sold lately have a built in 4-8 port
switch. One ethernet port for the cable or dsl modem to plug into - this is
called the wan side, and typically 4 ports on the LAN side to plug in 4
cables.

Since I was having problems with my router, I stopped using the wan side of
the router and had that modem running to the "RED" interface on my new
smoothwall box. I then have a cable running from the "GREEN" side of the
smoothwall box to the LAN side of my router which the rest of my computers
are hooked up to either directly or though yet another switch upstairs.

So basically, the router switches packets from one computer to another. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch .

My old P120 won't reboot like that. This happened with FreeBSD too. For some
reason, you had to run downstairs and push the button off then on because
the box would hang on the reboot. It's very weird, but I'm used to that
issue.

Thankfully I have a static IP.

BTW, I turned off ICMP, turned on syn cookies, and disabled that ident rule,
and had a friend from Canada aggressively scan me. She said it nearly froze
up her linux box trying to scan it. My network didn't feel a thing.

You wouldn't happen to have a PNY video card in your P120, do you? I
have an old Compaq AMD K6 that hangs on reboot, and I finally narrowed
it down to the video card.

I doubt it since it's integrated into the mobo. I also have a laptop that
hangs on reboot with win2k+ installed. When I power down and power up - no
problems, but if I do a warm reboot it hangs always. It didn't behave that
way with any of the older windows from 98-NT.
