I have an error message when opening a .doc file attachment, it reads;
this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the set associations control panel.

i have set the association to open all .doc files with office word 2007, but
the error's still there!!!! any ideas??

It will let you open the doc files which Office 2007 will not let you since Office 2007 Word it is a bit different format than other office versions of word

Hi Peter,

I am able to open .doc files in word, but I am not able to open word
attachments. The problem is different, I guess I failed to make that clear.

Are you able to save the attachment to the hard disk, and then open it? If that works, but you're unable to open the attachment directly from Windows Mail, try this:

Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
Right-click "FileExtInfo.exe" and choose "Run as Administrator"
Select .DOC file type from the list and generate a file association report.
Post the contents here.

I have an error message when opening a .doc file attachment, it reads;
this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the set associations control panel.

i have set the association to open all .doc files with office word 2007, but
the error's still there!!!! any ideas??

Hi,
I have tried all the above suggestions to be able to open the .doc
attachments in Windows Mail and Word 2003 and I am still getting the message
that I need to create an association in the set associations control panel. I
am getting desperate now. Could you please help?

As I am also facing a similar problem in Windows Live Mail of not being able
to open .doc files. I am using Vista and Office 2007.

Are you able to save the attachment to the hard disk, and then open it? If that works, but you're unable to open the attachment directly from Windows Mail, try this:

Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
Right-click "FileExtInfo.exe" and choose "Run as Administrator"
Select .DOC file type from the list and generate a file association report.
Post the contents here.

I have an error message when opening a .doc file attachment, it reads;
this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the set associations control panel.

i have set the association to open all .doc files with office word 2007, but
the error's still there!!!! any ideas??

I have tried all the above suggestions to be able to open the .doc
attachments in Windows Mail and Word 2003 and I am still getting the message
that I need to create an association in the set associations control panel. I
am getting desperate now. Could you please help?

No, I ran the DOCFIX tool and it just said 'done'. I tried shutting down but
this did not make any difference.

Let's inspect the .DOC file association settings.

1. Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

2. Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
3. Double-click "FileExtInfo.exe" to run it.
4. Select .DOC file type from the list box
5. Click "View file association report"
6. Copy the contents of the report and include it in your reply.

As I am also facing a similar problem in Windows Live Mail of not being able
to open .doc files. I am using Vista and Office 2007.

Hi Chrissy,

Are you able to save the attachment to the hard disk, and then open it? If that works, but you're unable to open the attachment directly from Windows Mail, try this:

Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
Right-click "FileExtInfo.exe" and choose "Run as Administrator"
Select .DOC file type from the list and generate a file association report.
Post the contents here.

I have an error message when opening a .doc file attachment, it reads;
this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the set associations control panel.

i have set the association to open all .doc files with office word 2007, but
the error's still there!!!! any ideas??

Hi Ramesh,

No, I ran the DOCFIX tool and it just said 'done'. I tried shutting down but
this did not make any difference.

Hi Peter,

I am able to open .doc files in word, but I am not able to open word
attachments. The problem is different, I guess I failed to make that clear.

It will let you open the doc files which Office 2007 will not let you since Office 2007 Word it is a bit different format than other office versions of word

Hi Chrissy,

Are you able to save the attachment to the hard disk, and then open it? If that works, but you're unable to open the attachment directly from Windows Mail, try this:

Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
Right-click "FileExtInfo.exe" and choose "Run as Administrator"
Select .DOC file type from the list and generate a file association report.
Post the contents here.

I have an error message when opening a .doc file attachment, it reads;
this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the set associations control panel.

i have set the association to open all .doc files with office word 2007, but
the error's still there!!!! any ideas??

No, I ran the DOCFIX tool and it just said 'done'. I tried shutting down but

Hi,
I have tried all the above suggestions to be able to open the .doc
attachments in Windows Mail and Word 2003 and I am still getting the message
that I need to create an association in the set associations control panel. I

Hi Peter,

I am able to open .doc files in word, but I am not able to open word
attachments. The problem is different, I guess I failed to make that clear.

It will let you open the doc files which Office 2007 will not let you since Office 2007 Word it is a bit different format than other office versions of word

Hi Chrissy,

Are you able to save the attachment to the hard disk, and then open it? If that works, but you're unable to open the attachment directly from Windows Mail, try this:

Download FileExtInfo.zip from here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

Unzip the utility and extract the files to Desktop.
Right-click "FileExtInfo.exe" and choose "Run as Administrator"
Select .DOC file type from the list and generate a file association report.
Post the contents here.

I have an error message when opening a .doc file attachment, it reads;
this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the set associations control panel.

i have set the association to open all .doc files with office word 2007, but
the error's still there!!!! any ideas??

Hi,
It still wouldn't open it at first (i.e. the same set associations message
came up as before) but I went back to the Set Associations Control Panel and
reset it for Word even though it was already on it and hey presto! - it
works. I can't thank you enough for sorting it out for me - well done! Should
I now delete these downloads?

came up as before) but I went back to the Set Associations Control Panel and
reset it for Word even though it was already on it and hey presto! - it

Thanks Ramesh. I had the same problem on a friend's computer, and
eventually found your solution. Well done. Manually editing the
registry didn't work - but your patch did. You may like to know that I
got the same as Ms Curly - ie I had to go back to set the association
again, even although it looked like it was set. Not sure I would have
thought of that, so thanks to Ms Curly for that extra bit of advice.

Hi,

I have a similar problem and I tried all the proposed solutions even
the DocFix tool :
- DocFix tool 1.1 is giving me all the time the same warning that it
needs administrative rights, even when I run the program as an
administrator. I'm using the dutch version of Vista Premium
- The Office version I'm using is Office 2000, everything works fine,
except for teh windows mail, where i'm not able to open the doc
attachments directly.
Could you please help me ?
