After takin' a swig o' grog, arachnid belched out this bit o' wisdom:
It doesn't matter what any company does. We'll always have GNU/Linux, or
something like it, as long as the Internet is open enough.
The GNU and Linux systems were created by users for users. Companies
have appropriated them, and they can war all they want over patents and
such ownership crap. But GNU/Linux doesn't need the companies in order
to serve its users.
With source code, comes assurance.
I'm not under any illusions about our allies. Big Businesses got that way
by being ruthless. IBM isn't not doing this out of the goodness of their
hearts, they have their own plans for Linux. But, I'm hopeful we can have
it both ways - they'll defend us against Microsoft's machinations and take
Linux in the direction that benefits their own bottom line, but we'll
still be able to have our own distro's, too.
