Well, the differences are becoming fewer with the American press being so ashamed
of their national origin that they can't wait to jump on any phrase they can adopt
from Great Britain. As a case in point, "Went missing" was almost never heard in
American English dialects until CNN started using it in the Chandra Levy case.
Now, in the interests of seeming more "international" and less "American", the
phrase has become so common that the word "disappeared" has gone missing (LOL) from
our language.
