Greetings,
I'm running a old and very slow box (166 MHz.).
Can anyone suggest a good Internet browser that load quickly.
Try Firefox, took a day & forever to load. Got rid of I.E.
Using Win98SE with 98lite (98 with 95 shell & no I.E.).

TIA,

Have you tried k-meleon?

Definitely. That's the ideal choice for the system described. That
lizard is one gentle ballerina. (where's that gif?)

.. . . .
Minor add suggestion. For offline html pages, I've been pretty
satisfied using OB1 as my default handler, because it loads
instantaneously. This does require supplementing context menu
with other browsers, though, for when the pages are big, or
complex, etc.

K-meleon isn't bad but i had issues with auto-complete and history. i
also use Outlook Express hardened with Qwik Fix (not free). Mozilla is
probably a little heavy but i used to run it a lot on 500 mhz machines.

The K-meleon is on a 100 mhz with 64 meg of RAM. I'm also running 98 SE
(with no 98lite, and no alternative shell).

K-Meleon is agood choice, but it doesn't get updated that often (which
is important for security), but it's a very fast browser.

You could also try OffBuOne:

http://www.offbyone.com/ , download with OpenSSL DLLs (required for
browsing secure (https://) web sites).

However, it is not javascript- and java-enabled.

It's a tiny browser which fits on a floppy.

Have a nice day,
Manuel

I recommend Opera, definitely the best choice for such an old machine. It's
ad supported, but doesn't seem to contain actual spyware or anything
invasive.

YMMV- I have an old 166/96 MB RAM/W98SE, Firefox 09/Thunderbird 09 run fine, even
together. In the past, I tried K-Meleon (0.6 IIRC)and even with fixes, it was
terribly slow, the slowest browser I ever ran.

That is not the case anymore, it's somewhat faster then Firefox, matbe
you used an okder version, or an unofficial build? (The 'Wechselbalg'
unofficial build was to slow on my Pentium 366).

I have used latest K-meleon for 3 months before switching to Firefox
for lack of (security) updates for K-meleon.

I was thinking maybe Opera 3.xx; I think it used to fit on a floppy at
that time.

I still having a 200mhz machine which run quite fast to launch IE 6.
If you feel very resistance to vulnerability of IE, try Netscape 4
(the last version is 4.8) ftp://ftp.netscape.com/.

I don't recall Opera ever being freeware. Do you have a cite?

maybe not freeware by the strictest definition, but there was an Opera
that was banner ad supported (and thus free). dunno if they still
release that version or not.

The ad supported builds are the recent ones. My recollection is that
older builds are simply buyw*re.

ms is, and always will be:

I have Firefox 1.0 on 233/64RAM/W98SE. Not very bad.
