maybe not freeware by the strictest definition, but there was an Opera
that was banner ad supported (and thus free). dunno if they still
release that version or not.

We do.. :) You can now choose to have targeted Google ads instead of
random banners. Far less intrusive. Please note that version 7.60 is about
to come out. A worthwhile update.

Opera ads are horribly intrusive. Opera is possibly the worst example of
adware in terms of intrusiveness.

I bet you're right. I think it was $30. Been so long
ago...

Ohh, don't make me go to the archives.
I was certain there was an Opera 3x that was free,
at least in terms of unlimited/unrestricted usage.
No ads, no nags, no time bombs,
just an unrequited plea for money!
Opera 3, fit on a floppy. Ph?ck can't find it!
Try one from here and see, but I must admit, O3 was Crappy:

Four builds of Opera3x here. All trialware needing the purchase of a reg
key.
Not difficult to check...

I respect your opinion, although others feel differently about it. We even
have people that pays for Opera but want to keep the Google ads because
they find them to be useful. How sick is that? ;)

However, the only thing I really did say was that the Google ads are
*less* intrusive than the generic banner ads. I didn't quantify the total
"intrusiveness" of the ads on the Opera interface. :)

Opera has always been a closed source shareware. Even version 2.12 was
sold on a floppy in Scandinavia before it was maid available on the
Internet back in 1996.

Opera 2.1.x, the only released versions prior to 3.0, also were
trialware requiring a reg key. On start, they pop up a window
requesting the key; one of the options is 'Evaluate', and I don't know
if that option ever times out.

I recommend Opera, definitely the best choice for such an old machine.
It's
ad supported, but doesn't seem to contain actual spyware or anything
invasive.

I can second that. The latest stable version 7.54 is running fine on
my mother's Pentium 100.

True, but if you're running an older computer with an outdated OS then
you might have no choice but to go with a previous release of a
browser.

http://Faststonesoft.com has a browser I never heard of. You could try it:
It's free!

Greetings,
I'm running a old and very slow box (166 MHz.).
Can anyone suggest a good Internet browser that load quickly.
Try Firefox, took a day & forever to load. Got rid of I.E.
Using Win98SE with 98lite (98 with 95 shell & no I.E.).

I still have a 166mhz with 48MB RAM a I can tell you that the best
browser for me is MyIE2 lite. Of course, IE is required. Opera 5 is
okay as well. Have not tried 6 or 7 though. Just make sure you do
NOT install the java version of Opera as a 166 is just not fast
enough. K-Meleon was also test on my system as that browser seems to
be mentioned often. Unfortunately, K-Meleon is painfully slow.

I had Opera 7.51 on 233MHz with 64MB RAM. Not very bad, except for
starting up.

I've been using Opera 7.1 on this 233 with 32MB RAM. I am currently
trialling K-Meleon and am finding it to be faster.
