- Standard DVD or just some clips you have on DVD. Thyere are many
different formats and they may require some specific codec for it to work.

Thank you Joel for your patience
It is difficult to say what the problem is other than the DVD drive is
visible in "My Computer" but when I insert any DVD the drive still says
"insert a disk". I believe the drive worked before I upgraded to XP from
98se but as I have not needed it till now I can't be sure. All I wish to do
is load a new programme which I have on a DVD. The movie which I inserted
was just to test the drive, it is a standard format I guess.

Hmmm.. so the previous information you gave us isn't ...

Sorry, I hit the SEND command by accident. And now back to the main issue,
and first thing first

- Actually, you are the one hold all the answers that many of us would like
to know, and the least you provide the least we can response base on the
information you provide. So first thing first

- You should google for more information about your drive, try as many
tricks as you can find on internet. Or the more you try the more
information you can give us here, and the more information you provide the
least we have to ask for more, and the more answer/guess we can give you.

- So, base on some messages you say the CD part is still working fine but
the DVD part is not. This means

- The cable connection is OK.

- The DVD doesn't work and from the message above you said you only try
one MOVIE. How about try few others and go from there.

- How about loading a CDR program with feature to burn DVD (like Nero or
similar) and see if it recognize the DVD part (make sure to select DVD or
the DVD won't be recognized *if* you select CD mode). If it still don't
recognize the DVD part then go for next step

- If the DVD part still won't work, then the chance that there may be
something wrong between older *firmware* and WinXT. So, I would suggest
to check with the company who makes the DVD see if they have newer
firmware or driver etc..

*Also* you may want to check with different media cuz some may not like
some brand.

- If all failed, then I don't think it's worth to continue to beat the dead
horse, so I would suggest to get a replacement. DVD burner is so cheap
these days to try to save the dead drive.

Here, I toss away quite afew slow old drives when they started acting up.

Ashampoo and Nero see the drive but not the blank DVD +R....
PC World here I come
Thanks for trying

... and

- Does it see DVD-R?

- What did you tell Ashampoo and Nero to do? I don't use Ashamphoo to know
what it's, but Nero is a CD & DVD burner which I believe its job is to BURN
to CD/DVD *not* to see Blank DVD. Or you mean it won't burn to DVD+R?

- And can you burn DVD-R? have you tried different brand?, do you know if
your DVD burner support DVD+R? Version of Nero, Ashampoo, or firmware???

See, I ask more question than you need the answer <bg>

OK...If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck and quacks like a duck
then it probably is a duck.
Therefore I decided it definately probably was pretty well ducked and bought
a new one. Anyone got an orange?
Thanks for all your help.

Has anyone got drivers for an Ultima DH1-G40 DVD rom for XP
TIA

If I am not mistaken all XP users (inclduing you) get the driver for
DH1-G40 DVD even don't own the drive.

IOW, there is no specific driver for that specific drive.

This is a long shot, but I saw these symptoms once (reading cds but not
dvds) and the problem was a dirty lens on the reader. It was a laptop used
in the bush in Africa and the bay had visible red dust in eat. A light wipe
with a tissue fixed it.

Evrything is possible, and yes there are several companies selling CD/DVD
cleaner those have 1 or 2 small brushes on a disc suppose to wipe off the
dirt on the lens. As well toys to repair scratches on disc etc..
