I used to post through google, finally decided to get a decent newsreader,
I'm using Xnews now, but don't really like the interface and thinking of
switching to (Super?)Gravity. It would be of great help to hear your
comments on both programs.

TIA

Im using gravity and quite like it.I particularly like the option to just
download a certain number of post. The last 200 or whatever for example.I
havent that much experience of other newsreaders and i guess there are some
options peculiar to certain newsreaders, but personally i cant fault
gravity.

I have been using Xnews for quite some time and I really appreciate
the following features :
- no installation : one .exe file
- configuration through text files
- very low ressource consumption

The main drawback I see is that Xnews is not an offline newsreader.

You may also ask your question on news.software.readers newsgroup.

Gravity & Agent are a lot alike if you like those you wont like
Xnews. I prefer Xnews to Gravity & Agent. There are also MesNews
& Dialog. Can't tell ya about those due to them using installers
and such. Xnews takes time for most folks.

Thank you all for the quick replies, I just decided to give them all a
shot, switching for a new one after 3 days, I realize it's all personal
wether you like a program or not, especially after browsing through
news.software.readers. I guess the best way of making a choice is by my own
experiences.

I use both, but only for text like this (not binaries).
I like Gravity because it has a comfortable OE look and feel about it.
You can change almost all the settings to suit your taste AND it has a
good helpfile.
Xnews is faster and has the ability to reconstruct old threads if you
need to. It needs a lot of work to learn and the helpfile is a manual,
hard to read unless you know what to look for.
I have never come to terms with Agent or free agent.
If you do pick Gravity, avoid the Sourceforge version as it has no
spellchecker yet.
As someone said news.software.readers has lots of folks who will help
you.

Try Xnews, 40tude Dialog, Mozilla Thunderbird and Agent, than, decide
for yourself.

Very good, grasshopper. ;-)

Still can't beleive they preferred mr.Carradine over mr.Lee for that
role.

I believe it was the optically challenged old gent who (never) said

"Velly good glasshopper".

Use the knorredge wisery

I _love_ Xnews, but I have to admit I found all the lovely functions I know
by pressing the wrong button, and something cool happened

Indeed it was the old gent, and I must say, I really like OE as a
newsreader. I was using it anyway
for my hotmail account and decided to give it a shot. I know it's "leaky",
but I really like it, I must say.

I was a long time use of Gravity (before "Super" Gravity). I didn't like
"super" Gravity as well as Gravity, and moved over to XNews. I wouldn't go
back.

I've been using Xnews for years now. The interface takes some getting used
to, but it's really great. The biggest problem is that it's been
abandoned. But it works very well nonetheless.

Seeing taht youve been an xnews user for years maybe you can help me?
Im a gravity user but thought id try xnews after some recommendations
here.First impressions seem ok , but how do i
1.Get a "from" column when i open a newsgroup (all i see is
subject,q,lines,date,score,number)to se whose posting and
2.I just want to download the last 300 headers (including read headers). Is
there a setting that will remember this.It seems i have to use the "open
special" function all th time and keep ticking the incremental retrieval
limiter (set at 300) to accomplish this.Is there an easier and permanent way
to do this like gravity has?
TIA

1. Edit your the VisibleHeaders line in your xnews.ini file to look like
this:

VisibleHeaders=subject,from,date,followup-to,to,reply-to

You can sometimes achieve the same effect by messing with the column widths
between the lines and date columns.

2. I'm not sure. Try playing around with the values in the [XOVER] section
of xnews.ini.

Thanks for that but that line is exactly what i already have in .ini file.If
i click say this freeware group for example though ,it opens up with posts
under the headings i originally posted i.e
(subject,q,lines, date, score, number),and i dont know who posted unless i
actually open the header.Ive played a little with the header settings to
just download last 300 (read and new headers )but i dont think you can do
it.I cant anyway .

The VisibleHeaders setting concerns imho the headers displayed in
the full article view. In articles list view, the 'from'
field/column is between the columns 'Line' and No' : I guess the
'from' column is strangely 0 px wide on your pc ; try to move these
'Line' and 'No' columns' borders to make the 'From' column appear.
