Worth upgrading 9700 to 9800 Pro?

Dunno - I don't know much about 9700 np's. Depends a lot on what memory it
has and (obviously) whether the core is a good 'un or not.

If I were you, I would just fiddle about with Powerstrip and 3dmark for a
while to find out how far it will go before flashing the bios. And remember
its winter now, so summer may be a different story - higher case temps etc.

You might want to refine that question? Far, as I can tell, he stated his
clocks. What is your question?

If you read it again, its a perfectly clear question. Note there is no
comma between the "at" and the "450/360". I am not asking him "What is he
running at"

And Ben understood anyway. Thanks Ben.

Go slowly (10MHz at a time, probably less if you're getting close to the
limit) with overclocking and run Aquamark03 - you'll know when you've gone
too far by the randomly placed white pixels on the screen (usually memory,
but sometimes GPU), or dodgy looking explosions (GPU).

If you let us know what RAM you have on the card we can probably give you a
good idea of where it will get to.

If it's Samsung then the last two characters determine the rated speed:
2A - 2.86ns (350MHz)
33 - 3.3ns (300MHz)
36 - 3.6ns (275MHz)

My 2A reaches 360MHz before getting problems, so it's probably quite tight.

No problem. I think Strontiums point was that it should have been clear
that it was either a 9800 Pro or an XT (from what you wrote), and since
they're the same card, bar the timings it shouldn't matter which one, from a
performance point of view. Of course, it's still nice to know whether it
was an XT or a Pro that got to those speeds.

Yeah, think your right. I will probably have a go at overclocking. Spend a
bit of money on some extra fans.

Then I will wait for either the next range of cards from ATI or for the
Athlon 64 to become affordable. Might be worth upgrading to say a 3.7Ghz or
above processor based system.

I do enjoy messing with the PC though. just not enough to justify the
expense for a slight speed increase.

Actually, its wasn't clear to me. I thought just for one crazy moment that
you were suggesting you had a *9700* Pro up to 450/360. And don't laugh, I
have seen one running at that speed, with a water block.

I understood the thread, perfectly. If YOU had been paying attention, you
would have already known that he was referring to a 9800 pro... But, being
a participant, in the thread, I guess that went over your head.

Perhaps I should apologise. Having read many of Ben's posts/replies, over a
length of time, I know that he has the 9800pro. Maybe my reply was a bit
presumptious. Either way, sorry if I came of sounding like I was chastising
you for not being privvy to what he is running.

Hey no problem. But in my defence - and in response to your earlier, less
polite email - nowhere in the thread did Ben mention he had a 9800pro. I am
not psychic. Psychotic, perhaps ;-)
