Jim Macklin
My family was from Springfield but I was born in St.Louis
because they had better hospitals back in 1946 than
Springfield. I lived in Springfield until the early 70s.
We used to visit Chicago to shop at VL&A and Marshall Field,
also to see the museums.
When I became a professional pilot I flew into Chicago a few
times, Meigs was a pleasure until the dictator destroyed the
runway to build another slum, er housing project. O'Hare
was tough not because of the traffic in the air, but taxiing
(I was single pilot in a King Air F90). Midway is so small,
taxiing was easy, everything is within sight.
Winter in Springfield was usually not that bad. I never saw
a temperature below -28 F with wind chill about 50-70 below.
But that was usually only a day or two. We did have a cold
snap that lasted 5 weeks with the high for the day at an
actual temp never above -10 F. There was ice on the walls
inside the donut shops about 4 inches thick, most seemed to
be uninsulated concrete block and all the cooking had the
humidity near 100%. They had fans blowing on the windows to
keep the ice off so the windows could be seen through and to
prevent them breaking.
Do you enjoy watching THE BLUES BROTHERS because it is in
Chicago or for the music?
