Any recommendations for a stand-alone word processor that will handle
MS Word files. I have seen and know about quite a few that claim to, but
would like recommendations from users.

1. SOT Office (a bit like OpenOffice, hasn't tried the last edition)
2. Easy Office (hasn't tried it, but good reviews).

Which version are you using as I use it on a number of different PCs and
have not had that happen once.

I'd recommend openoffice above anything else (definitely including MS
Office unless you need something it has that ooo hasn't got - unlikely).

Atlantis Nova claims to do this, I don't use word so I can't verify:

"Atlantis supports multiple document formats (RTF, MS Word
6.0/95/97/2000, MS Write etc)."

I need something that oo hasn't got -- at least I haven't found it. I need
the old WordStar key sequences. These include two-key sequences and that is
what I haven't found oo to be able to do. Like Ctrl+Q-Ctrl+D for move cursor
to end of line. I have used these for 15 years and don't want to change now.
But oo can't seem to do two-key sequences. I would love it if you can tell
me how to do it.

This is nice.

However, I just made a test .doc file in Word with a minimal table and
a background colour and Nova could not open it correctly. For basic
..doc files, though, it appears excellent. I've made it my default for
..doc files and if one turns up mangled one day... fair euough, I'll
open it in Word.
Thanks for this app.
