No matter how many times I update the definitions, it still says I haven;t
done it in 109 days. How do you get the damn thing to reset and accept teh
new updates I repeatedly install???

Try using the Windows Installer Clean Up utility programme to remove the
Windows Defender signature file. Make sure you remove ALL of the old
signature files and then install the latest update. This is how I
overcame the problem.

Installing the Windows Install Cleanup tool didn't help. I even tried
uninstalling Windows Defender and then using WIC to remove the old
definitions, and when I re-installed Defender and tried updating the
definitions, I still received the msg saying no new defs.

I did the whole uninstall and restinstall and even the signature wipe thing,
and I have Definition Version: 1.14.1452.3 which was created a week ago --
are these really the most current definition files to date?

Yes they are. Windows Defender definitions have come out, on average,
slightly more frequently than once a week--most frequently, once a week.

Windows defender is not an antivirus solution--you need both a functional,
regularly updated antivirus, and Windows Defender.

Has each of you tried going to Windows Update, doing an express scan, and
applying all offered critical updates? (You can leave off the WGA
Notification update--I know that one is not required, and the EULA for it
states that it should not be applied to production equipment, so I recommend
against installing it.)

I have another variant: error 0X80244019 when Defender (Beta 2 uploaded today
- 16th may) tries to update definitions. I have run Microsoft Update, removed
Defender, cleaned out the signatures (msicuu2) and reinstalled Defender:
samme error. I am running XP Pro here. At home, I have XP Home and there
Defender went in like a dream.

I am showing this error in my log:

2006-05-16 07:33:33 5556 1120
COMAPI FATAL: Unable to connect to the service (hr=80070005)
2006-05-16 07:33:33 5556 1120
COMAPI WARNING: Unable to establish connection to the service. (hr=80070005)

Any thoughts on this? Do you guys think it's a firewall or network issue?
Does anyone know what ports WD uses?

Windows Defender uses the same underlying mechanism as AutoUpdate--should be
port 80. If Autoupdate is working on your system, Windows Defender should
be able to connect, at least.

If you back up a bit in the log--what server is it trying to connect to? I
don't think I can tell from your post whether this is firewall or not--but
that's one likely issue--Does your firewall require authentication?

I always get error 0x8024002B. I've tried cleanup, no good.

I did once uninstall, cleanup, reinstall and that worked. But no updates
work at all.

Running XP Pro SP2.

At home, WD works just fine on my XP Home system.

So--tell me about where you are--is this a work network, with a firewall?
If you take a look at %windir%\windowsupdate.log in notepad, and search for
"Server URL ="

what server is it trying to connect to?

Does my KB help at all here?

Bill was 100% correct.

I performed a scan and one of the critical applied patches to instal was the
Windows defender updates...

Once I installed this, it is now functioning like a charm!!!!

This worked for me as well. Running Windows update after cleaning everything
off and reinstalling WD -- it came up with an update that included the
definitions. Thank you Bill.

Katrina

Excellent--I can't promise this result for everyone, but it is the first
thing to try.
