Wireless router

It would be most useful if, instead of complaining that I am posting to the
wrong NG, you could suggest which one(s) would be more appropriate. Then,
if I have access to them, I would quite gladly go and post there.

Do your OWN research. Not only will you find out the answer to your
question then, but learn HOW to find out the answers which is even
more valuable.

I did NOT say, "You say that being able to connect with no security is a
good idea."

I said, "...that was obviously an excellent result, (your test with no
encryption)." AS A TEST, THAT was a GOOD idea - i.e. it perhaps
demonstrated that your problem/s is/are encryption related.
....it is NOT a good idea to use wifi without encryption, and as is commonly
advised, WPA is used in preference to WEP - IF YOUR HARDWARE SUPPORTS IT.

Encryption type evolution never seems to stop, WPA can be troublesome, as
there is more than one type - ...I think that the "pre-shared" key WPA came
out after the original WPA.

I found the previously mentioned, (on this thread), site MARVELLOUS, and
it's owner MARVELLOUSLY helpful, ...wonderful ...WONDERFUL man,
....and if you spend at least a little time studying his site, I'm sure you
will find all the answers to your problems on it.

You have my sympathies in that, it is VERY annoying to have to resort to
spending hours studying, and learning almost an entire "field" to solve a
particular problem. i.e. I knew very little about networking, even less
about wireless networking, and when I hit a problem with my hardware - it
took quite a few hours, over a period of months, before I knew my hardware
and it's software/firmware much more intimately than I ever wanted to know
it in the first place, in order to solve my particular wifi connection
problems !!!!

I have a Livebox wireless broadband router.

Computer 1 will automatically detect and connect to the Livebox - but it
will not detect other active routers.

Computer 2 will detect but not connect (automatically or manually) to the
Livebox.  However it will detect other active broadband routers and
(manually) connect to one which is not secured.  Yes the WEP code has been
typed in.

I can't seem to resolve these inconsistencies.

How do you swap between automatic and manual connection?

How do you choose to see a list of routers within range?

Thanks.

Have you considered checking any / all software firewalls and anti-
virus systems? I encountered a software firewall that will block any
wireless network SSID that is not listed in its internal trusted list.
