Windows XP SP3?

I agree MS is now saying SP1 MUST be installed before SP3, and they
are recommending that SP2 be installed. This is a change since SP2
since it wasn't necessary to have SP1 installed prior to that.
Do seem to be conflicting messages - I think I'll slipstream SP3 into the
already s/ XP+SP2 that I have.
But DON'T USE THE SP3 LINKED ON THIS PAGE!!! It's version 3.3.11,
which is a beta. It is NOT the final SP3! The version MS will
release this week is floating around, but I don't have a link for it
now.

29th. it's due out. I'm going to get it from a trustworthy site - MS puts
enough 'malware' and holes into the OS without chancing a dodgy download.

Doesn't matter. You're probably the only person reading this thread
who is stuck on this branch.

Which branch? At this point all of my own machines are running Vista,
and the servers will be going to 2008 one by one over the next few
weeks.

However, I provide support for all service pack levels that Microsoft
does. In practice, this means a fully patched Windows 2000 installation
(Pro and Server, but with IE 5.01 or the latest IE6, nothing in
between), XP Home and Pro (with only SP2 right now, that will expand to
XP2 and 3 for some time, IE6 and 7, latest fully patched version of
each), and Vista (RTM and SP1)

Part of that support includes at least a minimal level of how-to to
upgrade to a supported SP level.

As a result, this is more or less need-to-know for me, at least
eventually. On the other hand, once I have SP3 in my hands, I'll be
testing it out in VMs against our software packages.

Thanks.
I think maybe they were recommending SP1/SP2 to be preinstalled for the
prerelease versions only.

It does seem odd, usually whatever prerequisite components (like the
servicing stack in Vista SP1) will just get installed as part of the
service pack's installation process itself.

We'll be able to test for ourselves and read the official documentation
in a couple days.
