Too lazy to go to Microsoft's website and confirmed this, but I've
been seeing references to a service pack 3 for Windows XP. Just a
heads up, for what it's worth. I don't know if maybe it's already
been mentioned here.

Google works. You might want to start with a Google News search.

Not if you're a PC user.
But for a new install, wouldn't it save time to use SP3 as opposed to
SP2 with Microsoft Updates (with all of the rebooting)?

Probably, unless it automatically installs version 7 of Internet
Explorer which I would not want.

How can I keep the Update process from installing IE7? Just use Custom
instead of Express? Are there any updates that I would want that need
IE7 to be installed?

Thanks

Pay attention to what you are d/l from the update site and uncheck it. You
don't HAVE to install it if you don't want to.

SP3 is supposed to ship with IE6.

Plus it is a rollup of all the security updates so it would be quicker to
install SP3 on a new install.

Upgrade to Linux and save money.

Maybe, if I were willing to do without my favorite applications. If
I had been introduced to Linux a long time ago, maybe I would have
gotten into it, but then I probably wouldn't be using speech
recognition right now. Especially more so nowadays, applications are
why I use a computer and not to support an underdog OS. Those who
want choice shouldn't be promoting a different operating system,
they should be promoting the idea of separating the operating system
maker from applications makers, IMO.

Agreed. One of the biggest 'mistakes' (for profit and denying choice) ever
made was IE being part of Windows.

Thanks. Apparently Service Pack 2 should be installed
before applying the SP3 update.

No, full service packs are cumulative. You can install it onto an
original XP install if you want. I just made a slipstreamed copy of XP
SP0 + SP3 and installed it to a virtual machine with no problems noted so
far.

No. Each SP includes everything past editions had that are still
needed. Can't say anything about the one you downloaded
specifically

That's the service pack you should be saying something about, since
that's the subject. And according to Microsoft, yes it does require
prior service packs.
